After a vets visit with all five of my guineas to get their mites treated, Poppy got nipped in the eye by one of my other guineas lola why we were waiting at the vets, which has now resulted in her having to possibly have her eye removed as the cornea was damaged, I will find out her prognosis on Friday morning when I have to take her back to the vets. The vet has given me some eye drops called fucithalmic, I have got to use this for twenty four hours, to see if there is an improvement, if not looks like poor Poppy will lose her eye. Wish I could turn the clock back for her.:(8...

awwww no.... poor poppy....
its horrible when you think you've got to face that....!
i remember it with thorn... but... guineas dont have brillient sight anyway and it probably wont bother her... thorn was blind on one side and all i had to do was make sure i didnt pop up out of nowhere and make him jump...
:))
good luck.... and i really REALLY hope the eye drops work...
x

I really hope they do, but I think the vet in all honesty thinks it will have to come out. God I wish they hadn't got these damn mites and then this wouldn't have happened

I hope that Poppy's eye will recover!

PS: Eye sight is thankfully not a piggy's strongest sense, so after she's got used to the sudden change, you won't see any difference in what she can do.

Personally I think longer than 24 hours should be given before making that decision as it can take a few days of having drops before any great improvement is seen.

However, if it does come to this, then please don't worry too much. I had a piggie who had her eye removed, and to be honest it made no difference to her whatsoever. As soon as we got back from the vets after she had had her eye removed, she was standing up at the bars shouting for her food and she didn't behave any differently to how she had done with two eyes.

Just one thought though. How guinea pig savvy is your vet? Has he done this type of surgery before?

Oh heck Sharon :{:...

LOTS OF HUGS FOR YOU XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXx

AND HEALING WHEEEEEEEKY LOVES FOR LITTLE POPPY XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

the eye may heal but with out vision left i would avoid surgery if you can, the drops can take up to a week to work so furryfriends is right 24hrs isnt long enough i had a boar in that was bit in the eye the eye healed but he was blind in it and it didnt cause him any problems just went a grey colour x

It could have easily happened in the hutch/cage/run too - don't beat yourself up about it - these things happen!

The vet put some local anestetic into poppy's eye and managed to have a look at it and she seemed to think that it couldn't be saved, as the cornea has a small hole, and the inside if her eye has come through it. We are trying the drops anyway, but she wants to see her again in the morning, as she doesn't want her to go all weekend with this problem.
I have only used this vets a couple of times, they were recommended by Potteries guinea rescue as they use them for their guineas, so I am hoping all goes well. Cavy Savy vets in our area are thin on the ground.:(

Awww, poor Poppy fingers crossed for your little girl x

It does sound very similar to what happened to my piggie's eye. Does she appear to be in pain? My pig was in very obvious pain, and once the eye was removed you could see that pain had gone which made it all worthwhile.

I think it's good that you use a vet that has been recommended by a rescue. At least it means the vet is, or should be, knowledgeable about guinea pigs. Are your vets open over the weekend? I am just thinking ahead in case you needed to take her back in the event of any post op problem.

Keep us posted on how you get on tomorrow. Fingers crossed all goes well.

She doesn't appear to be in pain, she is on metacam at the moment along with the eye drops, I am hoping when they look tomorrow that they can save it, even if she is blind, but there is a small hole and the inner eye is poking out so I don't know how it will heal, if you know what I mean. Will let you know how she gets on. Don't think the vets are open over the weekend, that is why she wants to see us tomorrow.

Well, I have dropped her off at the vets now, just a waiting game now, I am hoping that they look at the eye and are able to save it, this is what I have asked for, but it depends what they find when they come to have a proper look at it. Picking Poppy up at 4, just hope that they don't ring me with any bad news.:(

congelton practice have open surgery saturdays 9-10am and 5pm-6pm no app needed.

sunday they are open think its 12-1pm no app, needed sez all on there website, i know its open 9-10am 2moz as I'm going with my dog for her booster and collect more bunny needles and meds x

Everything crossed here for Poppy. Hope it all goes smoothly x

Well we have had a phone call from the vets, and they have said that they don't really want to remove her eye if at all possible, as they didn't think it at that point, so the vet said he is going to stitch her eye closed for ten days to give it chance to heal itself, they are going to look again in ten days and review it then. So not over yet.:{

Aww bless her! Hope it heals well, so she wont have to have it out xx

More news when I got to the vets, the vet that operated said that her actual eye itself is not damaged, just the lense, so he is confident that it will heal, she is currently back home and eating as though it is going out of fashion, he has given me some anitbiotics for ten days, until he takes out the stitches. Hopefully it will have had time to heal, fingers crossed. Thanks for all your kind words of support so far.x>>

Good news then! I hope that the eye will heal well in time!

Yes I do. Poppy has had a little to eat, she has gone quiet at the moment, so I am hoping that it is just that she has had such a busy, stressful day. She is on metacam at the moment, and due for another dose, so I am off to do that now.

Thats good, I hope she gets well soon x

Aww bless Poppy! Really pleased to hear she is doing well and hopefully she will have her eye saved!
