I went to feed Bailey and Gus this morning and Bailey was sat in a pile of sloppy poo and had a pooey bum.

I cleaned him up the best I could and I've taken him to the vets this morning, who has given me oral Baytril to give him twice a day. And the vet just said to cut out veg for the time being.

The vet did have a bit of optimism that he might pull through, cos Bailey is still alert. He isn't wheeking though! He's completely silent.

I've separated him from Gus for now, and he has access to hay and I've syringed him about 1ml of water.

I don't know what could have caused this. Their diet consists of spring greens, bit of carrot or celery or cucumber in a morning, excel pellets at night and fresh hay topped up 3-4 times a day. They live inside. Nothing has changed that could have stressed him that I can think of.

Help!

Is there anything else I should be doing for him right now?

i stopped giving mine spring greens ages ago for the reason that they got the poo's :( :(

He's 6 years old and we've had him 6 months, and he's had spring greens the whole time he's been with us and it's never happened before.

poor lil man,I know what youre going thru hun and it sucks,i hope you got him in time ;)

I think best diet for a guinea is carrot romain lettuce, tomato (no pips) cucumber, broccolli (not TOO much but enough for them to get a decent taster haha like 2 - 3big spouts of it) kale, parsley, red and green pepper, cabbage leave.
Grass when they're in the run, and sometimes mum gives them a bowl of grass if its rainy or too cold to go in the run.
Dandilion leaves (Guineas LOVE THEM)

Our guinea pigs don't eat celery they don't like it one bit, plus it's a little acidic, maybe you shouldn't give them celery gaffer, that maybe what is causing it. And if you leave excel pellets in for them 24/7 I think that will be good, thats what we do, cause then they can eat it whenever they like, as we all know guinea's eat almost constantly.

Our guinea pigs have never had diarrheoa from that diet, which is what they've always had.

Gaffer, if your vet has told you to leave veggies out for tonight maybe you can give him critial care? It's got all vitamins and minerals a guinea pig will need, because you guinea pig needs it's nutrients everyday.

Yep well said Ali, ........ little Bailey needs to get some substance into his system, Critical Care or Recovery is brilliant got all the vits etc... they need O0
All the very best love, we'll keep our paws crossed O0 :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Maybe keep his fluids up as well if not getting any from veggies

Thanks,

I'm syringing him water, and he's eaten some grass.

I don't know where to get any recovery stuff from now, the vets have closed and there are no shops open. I'm in South Yorkshire, if anyone's seen the news we have had flooding and we have no electricity. It's a good job the vets opened for a short time becasue there's no phyisical way I could get across the city to the emergency vets as there are no buses and none of the nearby cash points are working so I have no money. The vets were good and are letting me pay later on in the week.

We are at my in-laws nearby who have got their power back on, with Bailey, to keep him warm.

I'll try mushing some pellets up with water later and syringing that to him.

i wouldn't advise giving grass, for now stay off the fresh stuff, just hay and pellets

Oh Ok, it was the vet who said to feed him grass!
He's just got hay and pellets in the carrier with him.

Pellets mushed up is great O0 O0 O0 O0 and water as well O0 O0

Oh dear i heard you were all having probs have had many pm's about this, LOVES AND SAFE KEEPING TO YOU ALL :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
Keep in touch with the vets if you can, now you've done everything right, keep up the fluids (water only) and use the mushed up pellets, can you puree some veggies for him? maybe some nice fresh veggies pureed and then syringed just might perk him up as well O0

I'm about to go zzzzzzzzzzz, but we'll keep our paws crossed, come on Bailey :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
Duke sends very brotherly loves to you :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

did the vet not suggest probiotics mine have Avipro first sign of the poops and it always works or my vet gives me fiberplex carrot flavour paste dont forget dehydration is very important to stop and as already suggested cc or slushy pellets baby food is another option i use Hipp veggies always got a jar ready add a little to either cc or pellets, and obvioulsy keep warm at all times , good luck

Oh, dear poor little Baily. sounds like you are doing a great job, keep it up. my piggies send their love and so do i :smitten: :-* :smitten: :-* come on little fella you can pull through!

Oh god I hope he will be ok. Keep a constant check on him and keep syringing him some water or some mushed food like everyone says. COME ON BAILEY!

He's a bit better today, no more diarrhoea, his poo's look as they should look now.

He's still not himself though, he's just sitting hunched up and he hasn't eaten much. Bailey normally loves his hay but he's hardly touched it since last night.

I've carried on with his Baytril for today, I've got a follow up appointment at the vets tommorrow morning so I'll get some Bio-Lapis for him.

:) ah I'm so pleased! I lost my lovely Sam just 2 weeks ago you see. He had diarrhoea and we lost him so I think I'll panic over everyone who comes on here saying they're little one has it. I am really happy he's doing better. Well done lil chap! Keep it up!

so pleased hes picked up always have pro biotics in your piggy medical box and sue it at the first signs of diarrhoea if after a day its not working ( it should do this quick ) then you know its something more serious and see a vet,

Thanks all,

Bailey seemed quite withdrawn first thing this morning, he's lost that sparkle in his eyes. I'm not giving up on him though!

I've taken him back to the vet this morning who basically said its either a gut infection or a tumor, he said he couldn't feel a tumor anywhere so wants to carry on treating it as an infection. So he gave him a metoclopramide injection to keep his guts moving so they don't shut down and he's given me some Fibreplex paste to give him 3 times a day for 2 days.

He said to come back on Saturday if still no improvement. :(

I'm syringe feeding him now as he's not eaten much over night.

Please send your get well vibes for Bailey, he really needs them right now.....
