Hi,

We recently got a young male (around 10/11 weeks) to go with a 2 and a half year old male who lost his companion of the same age.

The introduction between Baby and Ted seemed OK and apart from trying to work out who the boss is (seems to be Baby as Ted is quite timid). That said there has been some barbering from Baby towards Ted and he seems to have lost a lot of hair on the lower back. Ted in himself doesn't seem very concerned and will run off and hide when it becomes an issue. They seem to being getting on quite well apart from this.

But the hair loss has worried us. They both went to the vet last week to get checked over. She believed the hair loss was just down to the barbering and she could not see any sign of mites (she did not do a skin scraping).
The hair loss has got a bit worse although there are no scabs or bleeding. It just looks like Ted is balding on his lower back. My worry is that this is the area where mange can be common from what I have read and I don't want to put it down to barbering if it is something more.

I suppose what I expected with barbering would be the hair to just go very short but this looks more like Baby has been pulling them out by the roots which is a little destressing (although I do know this can be normal behaviour under the circumstances I still wish it wasn't happening.)

I have a couples of pictures which dont show it too well but perhaps someone will have had similar issues?DSC_0158.webpDSC_0156.webp

Hi!

How piggy savvy is your vet?

Personally my guess is on mange or hay mites (which are invisible to the naked eye) or a fungal skin infection and not barbering (not common in this spot) or self-barbering (which would be for irritation and discomfort in the skin, so we are back to fungal or mites). PS: Skin scraping is not always conclusive, the same as using ultraviolet light for ringworm.

Thanks for your opinion. I will take them both again. The vet we use is a specialist in exotic pets but I'm not really sure how good she is but then I feel that about most vets I've seen recently. The vet listed for Grove Lodge Vets in my area has moved on to Worthing so not really sure who a good one is in Brighton.

Thanks anyway.
