Hello all I hope you are all well,

The vets have given me these eye drops to do one drop 4 times a day, I’m thinking every 4 hours or something? I can ring them tomorrow if needs be and see, but just seeing what you think is best without getting up in the night to do them

Many thanks

Hi

Try to give the eye drops twice more between the first lot when you get up in the morning and the last lot when you go to bed in the evening.

If you can, please space them out evenly throughout the day but that depends on whether you are at home all day or out working. Use your common sense and don't get stuck on numbers. If you get closer than 2 hours between lots, please skip one lot.

And please don't get up in the middle of the night unless you wake up naturally and are fully awake. This is not a life or death battle.

If its 4 drops per day, i do one first thing as soon as I get up around 6
30, another round 11am to midday, 3rd drop between 5 and 6 then the last one before I go to bed around 11pm.
Hope this helps!

Don’t worry, I was certainly not planning on getting up in the middle of the night to do them! 😀

Many thanks for the information, much appreciated =]

Hello,

I took my pig to my usual vets about her I’m going eye issue. I absolutely have no idea how the other vet I do not normally visit did not see “a slight scratch/abrasion” the first time, but this vet did, she has a very slight abrasion or scratch and the dye was taking up, so there’s a tiny tiny ulcer I think like a dot on her eye. I had a look myself and can even see the slight scratch to the naked eye.

My question is will the abrasion mark still be there regardless but no ulcer when it heals? She seems to still be squinting, but maybe not as much. I think the vet did mention an eye referral if it doesn’t heal within another week with that being 2 weeks overall of treatment and maybe a different antibiotic drop. It’s not getting worse anyway. I’ve never had a tiny ulcer like this it was like a dot when they used the dye again

Appreciate your time, thanks

I forgot to add, I have asked for some remend as well which i think they will dispense and happy to try alongside

Remend is a corneal repear product, which is generally usually prescribed for larger scratched areas in the corner or deeper but not penetrating scratches of the cornea.
If your piggy is in pain, some metacam in the first few days can help with the discomfort.

Thank you :) , I managed to get a quick video of her in her hidey of her eye, although she might be sleeping? Can you attach videos on this website or no?. The flash was on which is why her eye looks funny! I also forwarded it to my vet

- YouTube

Unlisted video on YouTube to see what’s going on. I will delete it after a day or so

It looks painful (the squinting) but not ulcerated (that would show up in blue or purple). You have seen a vet before that has kicked in - it also depends on the nature of the damage. What I cannot judge on is the extent of any surface damage.

It is going to usually take 2-3 days to get past the initial painful stage and for the healing process to kick in fully. Be patient and persist. ;)

Thank you for that. I just wanted your advice on it currently, I mean the vet said she could see an abrasion on the corneal and the dye showed a tiny area of ulceration. Is that correct? I thought an ulcer is just more less the whole part of the eye.

Also when I give her anything into her eye she just closes it shut almost and keeps it squinting shut like there’s something irritating it? I did explain that to the vets but she said to persevere with it all, but I have been doing it for 5 days now and not much better and she said to continue it for another week. I’m not going to lie I am abit worried it’s something else or it’s not going to heal with what we are doing, however, whatever it is it’s not getting worse. I have some metacam here, so I’ll have to ask how much she needs for her weight

I appreciate your time I really do :)

Minutes after her drop, not sure if this is right, she’s not pawing or making a fuss just closes it

That is a perfectly normal reaction. Allow the meds to be absorbed.

Thank you Wiebke I appreciate it so much. It took like 20 mins for her to be able to open her eye more properly after the drops. That’s definitely normal yes? I am only making sure because I don’t want some sort of reaction. I worry about eyes and I haven’t had many issues with previous ones with them

Hi

Please take a step back and try not to anxiety hover. The first few days are not pleasant because the eye is so painful and sore but things will settle down, I promise you. :tu:

Please try not anxiety hover and leave the room for half an hour before coming back for the eye drops. Don't put the additional burden of your own fears onto her and rather concentrate on sending her calm, green healing vibes from a distance. That helps her a lot more.

Thank you, what do the antibiotics and leave the room for half hour till other stuff needs to be put in? Probably would help me to be fair. Thank you :)

Yes, do the antibiotics and then leave the room for half an hour. Return to give the tear gel or drops. Given the antibiotics time to get absorbed and to get to work. This doesn't happen any quicker when you sit by and watch - rather the opposite. ;)

Praise her lavishly after every treatment and give her a little treat, even if it is just a tiny bit of her favourite veg out of her daily allowance before you leave.

But please give both of you space.

How long can eyes heal up? Can it take up to two weeks sometimes? I thought I’d see some improvement already. Not sure if a different antibiotic would work? Can the abrasion scar, but the ulcer heal?

Not sure what was going on, it was a like a triangle shape (tiny) obviously where the abrasion happened and was taking the dye. I’m re booked in for next Thursday to have another check on it to see if the vet thinks it’s better. If not might be a referral with a slit machine?! Shall I suggest another antibiotic before referral, that being if she doesn’t think it’s healed. I’m just asking some questions I hope you may be able to help with :)

I have managed to get a great picture of what’s on her eye. Does this look like an abrasion mark to you? I’m struggling to trust the vets at the moment. Obviously I have a follow up Thursday.

Hi

It is unfortunately impossible for me to tell you from the picture; it could be a still slightly ulcerating cut or minor perforation but it also be something on top of the cornea or a reflection from something you are wearing or that is refelcted from in the room.

For a confirmation I would need to hold your piggy and turn her head around for the light to fall onto the eye from different angles. I am sorry, but online support has got its limits and this is one.

However, the eye looks good and like it is healing well at the rate you would expect. It doesn't look sore. :tu:

Okay appreciate it anyhow :)… I can assure you totally that it’s not a reflection, that is exactly the mark the vets picked up on and you see while angling it to the light, I’m still gonna continue the drops till Thursday when I see them

Thank you so much anyhow :)

Whatever it is, it is pretty minor so please don't worry.

I feel stuck though Wiebke. She is still squinting when she’s sat down like something is irritating it. I just don’t know what else I can do and straight off the bat from a loss it’s spiralled me big time.

I don’t know whether I contact where I got them from and see what they say? I am not going to lie I’m worried and I don’t know what else to do. Something is not right and i don’t even know what else the vets can do. She’s eating and seems OK but it’s definitely not right :(

Have your vets looked whether something could be stuck under the upper lid?

Yeah they checked it all, I think the eye drops are stinging her eye like mad, she’s been worse squinting for over a hour since I done them today, not sure why. I feel stuck :(

Are those the antibiotic eye drops?

Yeah, not sure if I accidentally did too much, I don’t think so. She’s about 720 grams and would like to give her some metacam. It’s cat version I have a brand new bottle from my old pig. What would be a good dose to help a bit. 0.1?

Please speak to the vet about the antibiotic eye drops stinging - some eye closing afterwards is normal but not an hour - and give some soothing tear gel after half an hour.

Speak to your vet about the metacam. They will know whether it is a pain issue or not.

Thank you :) I thought maybe to help with her sore eye metacam. Can young Guniea pigs have metacam she’s only 4 months I think, don’t want them thinking I’m daft

Going to try and get some sleep, I might lay off the drops till I see them Thursday in case and explain then, they can check the eye etc themselves and see if the scratch ulcer is still there with the dye, she’s had a good weeks worth of it now as well. She’s out eating at the moment so can’t be life threatening although it looks bad.

Thank you for all your time and efforts, it’s truly appreciated, I mean it :) … as I said all this straight off a loss is hard to get round at the moment, but hopefully it will get sorted

Hope all is well
