Been to vets again about eye (update)

Thank you :) I thought maybe to help with her sore eye metacam. Can young Guniea pigs have metacam she’s only 4 months I think, don’t want them thinking I’m daft

Normal tear gel or drops will be more effective in soothing the eye.

Went to the vets today to recheck eye, they are happy with how it’s going, still needs some more time but apparently on the mend. She did give a name for it but she did think she had an ever so slightly smaller eyeball and thought maybe further down the line might be more likely for cataracts. I guess it’s a birth defect she has. I wonder if that’s why she’s squinting, but she didn’t mention that could be why. I think some areas were still showing on the dye slightly. Got to go back in a week to see again. They are gonna look more closely at her eyelids too with the smaller eye, but thinks it’s okay. I got chlorohenicol ointment instead of the drops and wants her on some metacam which I got. She did want to try Tricin, but they didn’t have any in! I mentioned the potential for irritation, but she put some in and didn’t seem too bothered by it (the vet) and said it’s gonna sting a bit hence the metacam too. She was very very good and has her own Guniea pigs and does a lot with them. She said use the ointment and remend and also the Ocry lubricant maybe a few hours after. Doesn’t remend do that, or is it slightly different? She said to use all 3…

I did think one eye was smaller than the other and it is the affected side. She’s given us ointment instead of drops as she prefers it.

Hi

Remend (UK medication brand) is specifically for corneal repair and lubricants of any form (including tear gel) are for rehydration of the eye. Those are two different things.

Metacam is not just a painkiller but also an anti-inflammatory that swells down inflamed tissue.

Suddenly in-drawn eyes are usually a sign of pain unless they have been there all the time ince you have had your piggy. It can be hard to find out whether something could be stuck under a very tight lid in naturally small eyes and it is usually a two person job.

I hope that this helps you?

It helps thank you. I remember reading that a forum owner called Betsy had something stuck behind their pigs eyeball which took 3 months, but she was showing yellow gunk but no ulcers etc. I wonder if mine has something like that. They may need to sedate her to have a proper look though? She’s not showing signs of any gunk or anything though so unlikely?

I’m just clutching at straws here and maybe I need to see what the vet thinks the next port of call is if no better but vet bills are racking up and I’ve had her 2 weeks

If there is anything stuck at all, it is for sure not showing any signs of damage to the eye surface (greyish ulceration gunk) or yellow infection gunk from damage/infection to the skin/conjunctiva.

Just please concentrate on getting that spot healed first. The medication should take care of it. Chloramphenicol is the stronger antibiotic licensed for eye infections. Please keep it in the fridge. It is not pleasant for the piggy but that way it keeps its full efficiency for longer. This is a recommendation I have been given by a vet with plenty of experience with guinea pigs and have had confirmed by a couple of other vets. Medication is normally fine to be kept out of the sun at room temperature (up to 25 C).

Took to vets again Wiebke. They suspect entropion but unsure if that’s from the damaged eye so gonna see. I’m guessing that’s an operation job to fix?
