Best Pellets And Hay From High Street Stores?

At the moment I'm feeding my 5-month-old boars on Greenwoods pellets and Vilmie meadow hay from Zooplus. Price is good, and they seem to like these products, but since they'll be moving to adult food soon I was interested in what the best pellets and hay I could buy locally might be. It gets a little stressful knowing I can't get extra food in an emergency!

I have a Wilkinsons, B&M Bargains, Morrisons, Millbry Hill, Home Bargains, and Tescos in my local vicinity -- I know the hay from B&M and Wilkos is meant to be good, but can anyone recommend the best (timothy-based, no alfafa, low calcium, yadda) pellets that can be bought from these retailers? Hay recommendations are welcome too (I'd get it from a local farm but lack of own transport makes things tricky).
 
I know this is an old post but I've only just joined! I believe kms hayloft are the best pellets for piggies low calcium etc. Unfortunately they are in America so shipping is very expensive.

Pets at home nuggets are very good. Low in alfalfa and calcium. I use them for my adult girls. And for hay I use a mix of meadow (£3.49 for a maaaassive bag from The Range) and timothy hay ( again The Range do a bag of timothy hay with dandilions mixed in for around £2.99. And I also use pets at home timothy hay that's just plain nothing else in it. If you don't have The Range I believe Wilkos have similar products...
 
Haven't been to the range for a while must go soon. My boys love the Alfafa king Timothy hay beautiful and green. It's nearly £10 a bag so I use pets@home Timothy hay and add that for added taste also like oxbow Timothy hay too but that can be quite thick and course and I scared it could give them a hay poke to the eye. Yes my boys also enjoy pets@home nuggets I'm at a loss with which are the best as there is lots of conflicting information out there I just want healthy piggy food
 
I know what you mean, it can be a tricky balance between price and nutrition too :no:.

Rosewood do a grainless pellet, but the yucca is apparently bad for guineas. I wonder if it's worse than the beet pulp in the P@H?
 
I didn't know that either I thought for the UK it was Burgess according to the guinea lynx site they say kms hayloft are the best then oxbow. So I've ordered kms pellets as these are Timothy hay based and the lowest in calcium and high vit c content our pellets seem to be wheat grass
 
shipping was $69.50 and the pellets are $12 for 10lb bag. It takes about 3/4 wks unfortunately shipping is such a killer though!
 
It's mad isn't? it they do love it though it was actually more than that as I ordered the storage box scoop and a cavy record book too so it was over £96 in total.
 
Oh absolutely I'm always on the look out for trying new things. I'm addicted to YouTube looking at other people's piggies my boys are two and are in their prime so want to keep them like that. Do you give yours oxbow vitamins?

From what I've read I think pets at home ones are better, they seem to be lower in calcium and alfalfa etc. I'm sure there was a "warning" on here about burgess as they are high in alfalfa...

Did you by any chance order any hay from them? I'm looking to purchase some good quality hay from KMS, but it may be impractical, if the shipping cost is as high as $69 for the pellets.
 
@helen105281 has done a lot of research into Guinea Pig Pellets . There are some brands available that cost less than $69 shipping !
 
I am working on a pellet guide at the moment but it is slow progress as I have very little spare time. The pellets I recommend are grainless and you can get them from Zooplus.

It can be a bit tricky transitioning in grainless though as they are much bigger pellets and aren't full of the usual fillers that most commercial ones have and it is these that the pigs like. I still have 2 pigs (new ones) who only eat the grainless if they really have to.

It's knowing what a guinea pig needs to maintain good health and then breaking down what's in the pellets it's so hard and time consuming looking forward to your list

Oh I've just checked them out they are good and soya free too which almost all the pellets contain fabulous thank you

I used to use Burgess pellets but have switched to Asda pellets as I have gone back to being a student and haven't got as much money as I'd like to spend on piggies! They have a similar ingredient list and don't make up a large part of my piggies diet anyway. The hay from B&M is good, piggies liked it better than any others I could find. And its usually quite economical. The best hay I have found is larger bales (compressed, wrapped in plastic) from equine stores. They expand a lot once opened and last my 5 at least 2 weeks, for around £7. Its also great quality hay.
 
I would recommend any of the following which can be bought over the counter quite easily.

Burgess Excel with Mint
Burgess Excel with Blackcurrent & Oregano
Harringtons Optimum Guinea Pig Food
Supreme Science Selective Guinea Pig

They may not be quite as good as the earlier recommended foods but they should only account for a small % of their diet & it's usually the veggies that need to be carefully balanced x
