It's been a while since I have posted, I hope everyone is doing well. Unfortunately I have some bad news. If you recall, piglet and george hate each other. All 3 of them are in a big c&c cage, piglet on the other side of a divider. They have been in that setup for well over a year, no problems. Well I went down to feed them this morning, and I discovered that they broke down the barrier. Piglet was curled up in a ball all puffed up. Took him out and saw blood in his fur. Well oh and I rushed him to the vet. They shaved his back and saw the extent of the wounds. They look absolutely horrific. They gave us a 2 week supply of baytril and an antiseptic solution to wash the wounds with. Fortunately the other 2 look perfectly fine. Unfortunately the vet didn't have probiotics for guinea pigs. I have a little left over from a previous visit, but I don't think enough for the whole time he will need it. Will poop soup suffice? I have never made it before, so any suggestions would be great. Scroll down for the pictures, but again they are a little gruesome. Thanks in advance.

Oh my gosh, poor little piglet, that bought a tear to my eye and a lump to my throat, that must have been so painful for him!

Poop soup will do very well and is very popular, but i always use johnstons pro C pro-biotics and they are really good, i get them from P@H.

Healing vibes to poor piglet, gentle cuddles from me.

x

Poor Piglet, that looks so sore :( That must have been horrible to find. Hope he feels better soon.

Lots of healing vibes to him x x

Oh my god! Is it possible to keep him permanently in his own cage? Poor thing, and poor you! I use a nondairy acidophilus from a health food store. Maybe another vet would have the probiotic. Please keep us posted.Hope you both feel better soon.

p.s. keep a close eye your beeding and his hay dosnt get in that would.

My Little P once fell into Fred's cage, I found him hiding in the hay loft. Such a sad site, thankfully he'd managed to get out of view and Fred had decided he wasn't there as he couldn't see him. Not a pleasant experience, little P was cut all over and Fred has a nice cut mm's from his eye he was very lucky.

I hope your little one's wounds heal quickly, I think he deserves to be spoilt for a wee while x

Managed to get a refill of the probiotic i got from a different vet, so that's a relief. Hopefully will keep his tummy happy while the antibiotics work there magic.

I had to wash his wounds with the antiseptic solution the vet gave us, and it broke my heart! Poor piglet was making the "ouch" squeak. I don't know how much it hurts, but I wish I had pain medicine for him. :(

Its hard to hear them squeek but if his eatting, poo and pee look s normal he should be fine without pain meds as pain meds sometimes affect their poo. :) L spoil him!

He is eating and pooping. The poops look a little wet, but they are well formed. Keeping a close eye on him, and yes he is being spoiled!

I am shocked at the wounds. It is awful. I think keeping them in separate rooms is best. I am sure it will all heal. Keep everything as clean as possible. I hope he gets well ASAP. I would be in pieces finding that so I hope you are ok to. Xx

Poor Piglet, I really feel for him he must be very sore. You wouldn't believe that cute little guinea pigs could do that sort of damage.

Keeping him in a separate room is not really an option. But he is definitely in a small "hospital cage" while he heals. Not sure what I am going to do after that. We have a weird dynamic. Piglet and roger are friends, and roger and george are friends, but piglet and george hate each other. I want to keep them together with a barrier, but if i do it will need super reinforcements. They were always like that, and this is the first time there has been a problem. Obviously I don't want this to happen again, so I have to come up with something. Just not sure what that is yet. Thanks for the healing vibes everyone!

I wonder whether Piglet will be stressed being near his enemy? Could you not get piglet a girl friend or boy friend and put him in another room? Space is always an issue I guess if you need to separate piggies and housing them inside. I am not sure I would let them be close even if a wire fence is there after that injury. I don't want to upset you I guess I just have a different view point.

You haven't upset me :) I am open to ideas. I can't really get him a new friend because my dad would kill me, and we definitely don't have more room at this time for a whole new c&c setup. Dad wants me to get rid of George, because he thinks he is the problem, but i won't do that either. i strongly feel that if you commit to bringing an animal home it should be a forever home. plus i love him, regardless of his discord with poor piglet. i will see if piglet shows signs of stress being near george, right now they are in the same room, just several feet away. if he does show stress, then that's another aspect to think about! ?/

I personally would keep the aggressive Pig separate. I have no idea if castrating them would make any difference, maybe others could comment. I understand not giving up on animals because I could'nt. I have six girls and they gets on well after a few teething problems. How about getting a Hagen zoozone for piglet? There is no way anyone could get in or out. You would need a bit of space, it could go near the c and g. Maybe give your Dad a little time to think about what has happend.... I guess you could worry the problem could get bigger if you get another piggy. It is not easy. I guess any parent would be a bit upset over fighting animals and the advice maybe a bit emotive early on. A friend of mine had to keep one lone piggy due to nasty fights, he kept the attacker alone, I dont think that piggy was bothered living alone as far as I knew. I guess you need to focus on poor Piglets recovery then plan the next step. I do hope it all works out and Piglet makes a good recovery. x

I am very sorry; that looks pretty horrific! I hope that it all will heal up well without any abscesses. Please weigh Piglet daily to monitor his health and wellbeing that way.

Could you keep Piglet on a table ABOVE the other two boars, so they cannot ever meet again (not even by accident) or see each other?

I agree that it is not fair on your other boy to get rid of him for doing what boars do. Unless you can find a good rescue with a non-destroying policy, most US shelters will simply put him down as he would be considered unrehomeable. :(

Have you found probiotics? You can get them on the internet, or you may find some in a local pet shop. They are a help to keep the guts and the appetite up, but they are not central to him healing, so you need not to panic.

Up above or separate is great. Nutering the boar wont necessarily make any difference.:)

Why not put one cage on top of the other? That way they wouldn't be able to interact unless one jumps out of his cage lol.

EDIT: Just realised previous two posts say this haha.

Gosh, poor Piglet. Hope his wounds heal well. I would not keep him near George any more. I would keep them above or below, as has already been said.

Poor Piglet :(. I hope you can find a way to keep them from getting to each other again, it's not easy I know when space is an issue. Piglet might well be happiest away from the others with his own friend & I hope that maybe you can manage this somehow.

I hope it's healing ok :)

Thanks Wiebke. I am hoping that since we got him to the vet as soon as we discovered what happned, and started the antibiotics right away, chances of infection will be lower. Plus whe we got there the nurses cleaned him out pretty well, and sent us home with similar stuff to wash him with once a day. I did manage to get a refill of the probiotics, which i hope will prevent him from not eating. while i do have critical care, it's hard enough to get him to take the meds, let alone syringe feeding. but i will do what i have to regardless of how much either of us like it! still not sure what to do about the housing situation. and not that i would want to give him to a rescue, we dont have any no kill ones around here :(. I am determined to find a solution, and keep all of my boys in the process!

could you send me a picture of the c&c cage and I can have a look to see if I can come with a few design selections for you.

gentle healing hugs to the poor boy, and boys will be boys.
