Hi, i have noticed my guinea pig has recently started chewing the bars alot. She is 8 weeks old and lives with her sister in a 6x2 c&c cage and has plenty of different chew toys and wooden items that can be chewed on. So i dont know why she is doing this. If anyone could help as to why this might be would be super appreciated.

It may be she is doing it to get attention. What do you do when she does it? Does she do it at a certain time? You’ll just have to have a strong willpower and ignore her. Hopefully she will eventually stop when she sees she’s not getting her way!

As for chew toys, piggies don’t really use them. Cardboard boxes (sellotape removed) and wooden houses are best.

I would say that she is trying to tell you she board and want play time guinea pig are extremely social animal and need a lot of attention people thing that if they have a cage mater they don’t really need a lot of human attention but they do they love it x

I agree with @Siikibam. My guinea pig Daisy used to bite the bars of the cage (which was also 6x2 at the time), bit has since stopped as I just ignored her, as hard as it is 😊

My Lily had her little special spot in the cage where she'd go to and attack the bars with such rage I got concerned for the cage

Ignoring her and giving her a treat ONLY if she didn't bite the bars worked wonders for us. She has much better manners now!

I've got a boar who chews the bars a lot, not because I reinforce the behaviour, but because he's wanting to get in with live alongside sow. Had to move rooms yesterday to hear a phone conversation 🙉
If a piggy enjoys a chew, mine have always enjoyed the woven grass houses or mats, over wooden items. They'll keep them occupied for ages.
I have a totally unproven theory that more clever or sociable piggies chew bars 🤔

Can you ignore her, that’s really the only way. My Hector is a bit of a bar biter too, he can be distracted with hay cubes most of the time. I find a blanket placed over the cage for 10 minutes usually calm him down too if he’s really bad, it’s lovely that they want your attention but sometimes it can be quite annoying 😊

Yeah it turns out she wanted some attention i took her and her sister out for some lap time and she didnt bite the bars after that and they have 2 wooden houses and a wooden bendy bridge that they love to chew but might try a hay cube at some point soon 😀
