Poor Junior is back at the vets they are keeping him in for a few hours as his wound is leaking.

Sorry to hear this, he is in the best place for him to get it sorted. Healing vibes to your little one

Just off the phone to the vet she says his bladder may have been leaking a bit possibly cause by a loose stitch causing the water being syringed to him leaking from the bladder to his abdomen then seeping through his surgery wound, so they put surgical glue on the scar and some swab pads then drained the water from his abdomen with a syringe, they have not gave him any water to drink for a few hours to allow the bladder to knit completly shut over and that will stop the leak. She says he is a little quiet but is doing well he is sitting taking his recovery feed and he is scoffing it down she said......he must be starving. Ive to phone back at 5pm to see if he can come home so fingers crossed.

Oh no, so sorry to see this - what an unfortunate set back for you both :(
He'll possibly need some slightly stronger antibiotics, Marbocyl or Zithromax maybe a better option but not certain as never dealt with anything like this. The Vet will be able to clean the wound and show you how to do.
Healing vibes for Junior and a shoulder of support for you x>>
Please keep us posted on things.
x

Poor little guy, hope they have some positive news for you when you phone. He must be feeling quite poorly at the moment. Hope he is home soon, where he can have lots of love and attention.

Poor Junior, that is very unlucky for you. Hope he is ok now xx

He is home but he has to go back in the morning to get his surgical wound looked at again, there is still fluid leaking from it its like water, the vet says it is not urine does anyone know what this could be I'm quite worried about it.

Hi well so far so good, Junior seems a lot brighter and stronger this morning ive put him back in his own cage and taken his two buddies out so they are running round the living room like a couple of madmen and Junior is munching on his hay and he had some cucmber, melon and green pepper. His incision is not leaking this morning so fingers crossed. He was to go to the vets at 9.30am but i slept in so he has to go at 3pm for another check up.

Keep eating & getting better Junior :)

YAY - that is such good news and I'm so pleased for you all :))
The wound may be leaking what is known as serous fluid or exudate which is usual for a healing incision line etc.
Keep an eye on it and am sure with the ABX, he'll be fine.
I really am thrilled for you x>> Well done for being a fab mummy to him and to Barney for being a real little trooper :(|)

Barney? lol you mean Junior rolleyes thanks a lot for putting my mind at rest about the leaking, there has been no leaking today the incision looks better today like its starting to heal now. Junior has just wolfed down about 15-20ml of his recovery feed and some green pepper and cucumber then i gave him his septrin, metacam and cystease so he is now having a little sleep till its time for the vets at 3pm.

Thats Junior back from the vets and she is very pleased with his progress and he started pooing today for the first time since his op so i really pleased hes such a brave little guy I'm so proud of him. He was also given baytril for the next seven days just so he doesnt get an infection the vet calls it the big guns of antibiotics for a guinea pig it goes in all guns blazing {:| 1ml once a day i says to her is that not a bit of a high dose cause the last time he was on baytril he was on 0.3ml twice a day she says that is the maximum amount you can give a guinea pig she doesnt want him to get an infection after his incision had been leaking ohhhhhhhh that should be fun he hates baytril with a vengance :...

Oh gosh. That is a lot. And in one go too - poor guy. Have something sweet to offer him immediately afterwards. Cucumber is favourite post-Baytril treat with my boys. Do you have a probiotic?

I'm glad he's doing well :)

Oops, I'm so sorry, I meant Junior mallethead
There's another thread with a poorly piggy called Barney so got muddled :x
Just to add that Baytril is ridiculously bitter so mixed with a drop of juice such as Ribena helps.
Great news from the vets again :)p

If you've got to do baytril it might as well be only once a day as it's so yuk tasting! I mixed it with a bit of ribena last time & I think it helped a bit. The dose is worked out by weight, what does Junior weigh? Bertie recently had 0.6ml daily at 800g & I think that wasn't quite as high as they could have gone. I feel that if you're using an AB you might as well have a decent dose or chances are you'll end up needing another or longer course after. Good that you've got probiotic for him :)

ETA just seen the stone pic - poor little man! That must have been uncomfortable...

The morning of his surgery his weight was down to 860g he was 1010g about 3 weeks ago thats why we rush him straight to the vet as he was looking very thin. I got him a carton of blackcurrant ribena is that ok to dilute with the baytril? I think i might spilt the dose say give him 0.5ml in the morning and 0.5ml at night because there is no chance he will take 1ml in the one go i can see me and him having a fall out over it grrrr lol he seems to keep his mouth shut as tight as he can the minute he smells it.

That is a high dose of baytril in one go. I too would probably split it as 1ml would be a nightmare. One vet we spoke to said that some vets like to get it all in in one go ,but if that's not possible you can split big doses. I've never bothered mixing it with ribena as I find it is more liquid to fight them with, just get it in quickly as possible.

He must feel so better now that stone is out. Lots of healing vibes to him x

Thank you he looks better today as well he is now back in his own cage with his two buddies that cheered him right up.
He has an appointment for wednesday for a check up and to get weighed then back on the friday to get his stitches out if he hasnt already taken them out himself by then.

I also ordered a bag of oxbow cavy cusine adult pellets (timothy based) and a bag of timothy hay from Amazon today are these the ideal ones for him?

He'll certainly love the Timothy Hay! Never tried the pellets.. Keep us updated on him

Poor boy, they do hate baytril & that is a lot :(. Hope he takes it ok. Hopefully you can get a bit of weight on him again now that stone is gone :)

I use Oxbow Cavy Cuisine pellets as they're low in calcium. I bought them initially for my Jerry who has bladder sludge, but I now feed them to all my boys. They love them :)

Do you feed your Jerry timothy hay also? is that the best kind for bladder problem pigs?

I do feed him timothy hay, but I always have done (even before the bladder problems).

I lost a pig due to a bladder stone, and just a few weeks later we found out that Jerry had bladder sludge and needed his bladder flushed out. I spent hours trawling the internet looking for the lowest calcium hay, nuggets and veg, but everyone seems to disagree and it can all be so confusing.

My advice would be not to worry too much about giving the 'best' kind of hay or nuggets, just try to make sensible changes to his diet and lifestyle. With the exception of alfalfa hay, which is high in calcium and should be avoided, all the other hays are mostly the same.

Certain veg are also high in calcium, and should be given sparingly, or not at all. This link provides a lot of useful information: http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/...sphorus-Ratios-Explained-Diet-Advice-included

Also encourage him to drink as much as possible. Don't dry his veg after you've washed it, and perhaps consider adding another water bottle to his cage. Cucumber is also great.

Unfortunately, despite making all of these changes piggies that are prone to bladder problems and stones will keep getting them, no matter what you do :(

If you want any other advice, feel free to pm me :)

Hi thanks for the info i have been feeding him some cucumber, fresh grass, green pepper and sweetcorn I'm terrified to start giving him veg incase he falls ill again as the vet says his bladder is in quite bad shape and if he got another stone she doesnt think his bladder could take another op. He also gets timothy hay and oxbow timothy pellets which i got of Amazon they arrived yesterday and ive been syringing him 30-40ml of water a day to keep flushing his bladder.

But I'm a bit concerned about one of his back legs we had him out last night for some floor time, when he is trying to run his foot looks a bit deformed like it bent foward at the nails and he cant put his foot down properly, its fine when he is standing its only when he tries walking on it, my other half says it could be because he still has stitches in and his incision is healing and tightning up as the skin is knitting together and he must be still a bit sore.

Does anyone know if this sounds normal? should he be able to start walking properly once he has his stitches taken out?
I will call the vet in the morning and talk to her to see what she thinks.

The stitches might be pulling tight in the incision or there may be some temporary nerve problems from the surgery depending on where they went in, surgery can be funny like that & has unexpected effects sometimes. Sensible to see what your vet says about it & hopefully it's just a temporary thing. Is he still on Metacam for pain? I'm just wondering if he's able to walk better about an hour after he has his Metacam? That might indicate that it's a pain / discomfort thing.

It's good that he's eating well :)
