Hello! I have a 2 year old guinea pig, Charlotte. Poor girl is having a hard time health-wise. She had to visit the vet on Thursday as I suspected bladder stones. The vet did an x-ray and saw two small stones that she said she could pass on her own. One of these was already in her urethra, and the vet said it would likely pass over the weekend.

Fast forward to today. Charlotte is drinking and urinating a lot, and there is some blood in her urine. She is acting and eating normally and is her usual self. She seems to be doing well despite the pain she must be in.

Aside from making sure she is drinking a lot of water, is there anything else I can do to help her be more comfortable while passing this stone?

Thanks!

Please keep an eye on her to check that it doesn’t get stuck & block her urethra completely. If she’s managing to pee that’s reassuring but she must be in some discomfort, poor girl. Has she got pain relief?

Last Novemeber I took Patsy to the vet because she was very swollen in her genital area. The vet couldn't see any crystals in her urine so didn't suspect a stone and diagnosed a horrendous UTI. The vet put her on 0.3ml Baytril and 0.25ml Metacam twice a day. This is why I took her to the vet

As you can she her bits were very swollen. As I had only adopted her about 5 weeks before this photo was taken, I wasn't sure what was normal for her and what wasn't. The next day Patsy passed this HUGE stone.

I showed the vet and she was really shocked! She couldn't understand why there were no crystals showing in the urine. My vet is very experienced and a very good guinea pig vet with an exotics specialism and is the only vet I (other than Simon & Kim at C&R) that I trust with my piggies.

Thanks for your responses! No, the vet did not send us with any medications, but that may have been a result of another issue that the vet saw during her appointment (will post about this later). I’m keeping a close eye on her and she is still urinating and drinking lots of water as of now. I will keep a close eye on her today, and if there’s still nothing tomorrow when the vet opens, I will call and ask if it is possible for her to prescribe some. She is still running around, eating, and acting like nothing is wrong, but I know piggies are really great at hiding their discomfort ☹️

Wow, poor Patsy! That stone is huge 😳 I’m glad all is well now!
