Blathers

Those 2 sweeties are soooooooo cute! Which is which? I love the name Shrimp for a guinea pig!

It’s so amazing watching them blossom with proper care. I was told blathers bites, is aggressive and is super skittish. That couldn’t be further from the truth. I just hope he talks one day soon, we haven’t heard a peep out of him yet!
Shrimp is the black, ginger and white one. Molly is the agouti. Shrimp wasn't vocal when I first had him. But now I get quite a mouthful from him when I pick him up 😂😂. I think he's just finding his feet, settling in, allowing his character and personality to show.

Ahhhhhhh some exciting news on our end! We’ve selected a rescue to date Blathers at! They will have him for an entire weekend. I received an email this morning asking if we had gotten our bigger set up yet and about how Blathers is settling in. We had only put blathers in 1 of the 3 Midwest cages we bought and were going to donate the other 2 to the animal shelter up here. The plan was within the next few paychecks to save for the materials for the 2x6 C&C cage since where were at in the US the materials are pretty pricey.
The rescue emailed saying they have a very submissive roughly 3 year old boar they think would be a wonderful match for Blathers.
They also have a momma pig who just had 3 babies (2 girls and 1 boy) 3 1/2 weeks ago. Baby boy has been separated from momma/sisters and now lives nearby in his own cage. If the older boar doesn’t work out, they are willing to try the baby route. If neither works they will send him back to me and they can try again at a later time when they have more single boars available!
We haven’t had Blathers for 2 weeks yet so he’s still in “quarantine.” It looks like we may be working out something for the weekend of the 30/31st! Is it to soon to try dating him? The rescue seems confident. They’ve done this before, we’ve adopted from them before. They are truly a wonderful small pet rescue. I want to make sure he gets a great friend but don’t want it to be to soon!

He is delightful, it’s such a shame when they get labelled like that through no fault of their own, usually just silly previous inexperienced owners who have now idea how to handle them x

Fingers crossed it works out for him!

I just wanted to make sure, I wouldn’t want to jump the gun to soon! But I can see that even with more space Blathers just lays around and seems really lonely. It hurts my heart.

72A719A7-2C58-459A-BB44-492627A9B4C6.webp Meet 3 year old Fredrick! Freddy was brought to the rescue after his previous cagemate died unexpectedly and his owner didn’t want to get another guinea pig so they knew the best option was to surrender him in hopes he could find a new friend. Freddy is a submissive boy who adores attention, talks up a storm and loves lounging in hay piles. We’re really routing for Freddy and Blathers to match up first because this bereaved boy misses his lifelong cage mate!

This is 3 week old baby boy. He’s a quiet boy so far and is a normal baby guinea pig. If the bond between Blathers and Frederick doesn’t work out, this is his next date. He’s so super cute and we would be more than happy with whomever Blathers chooses!

They were definitely inexperienced at best. He didn’t deserve to be labeled like that because just a short week and few days here and he has blossomed into an entirely new pig! He’s never once nipped or shown any sort of aggression towards me.

You have done everything in the correct way with no expectations, a lot of new owners expect guinea pigs to be jumping through hoops after a week and then disappointment sets in or the piggie nibbles a small child and he’s classed
as aggressive. Well done you, you’ve taken everything a his pace and he’s going to have such a lovely life with you x

Shrimp is my boy. He's 2. From the RSPCA. He's part Peruvian. Black, orange and white. I've had him 7 weeks now.

Molly is his wife and she's 4 and a half. She's a silver agouti. She came from Pets at Home adoption part 3 years ago. Her sister passed away in March hence all these new adoptees!

Bramble is a crested agouti with shiny brown eyes. She lives with Millie who's the long haired brown and white one. They are around a year old and came from a rescue two days before I had Shrimp.

Thank you for your kind words! I am doing everything in my power to give Blathers the life he deserves especially after his poor first year of life. He will live the rest of his days comfortably and hopefully with a brother one day soon! I hate seeing so many piggies so poorly treated, this forum restores my hope in piggy owners.

Well good to know everyone’s names for when I come pignap them. I’m particularly a fan of shrimp and molly! They melt my whole heart

We’ve managed to convince the man of the house to do a C&C cage (I may or may not have used the but it’s my birthday week card to sway the vote) :)) I’ll get some pictures, for now we’ve upgraded to a Midwest while we save up for a 2 grid tall stand 2x6 C&C cage! Materials in the US are quite pricey!
I have my c&c on a "folding craft table" with curtains round it. Bonus is storage space underneath. You need to put a base of grids on your cage so its stable but may work out cheaper than building a stand from grids.

Love this idea! I may have to see if my husband is open to this instead of the grids. He wanted the stand to be 2 grids tall so he doesn’t have to bend over  men lol...

Mine is a Ferplast Plaza 300, a 160 and a 140 joined together with a connecting ramp, I have it on two camping tables made into an L shape. there’s room to store things underneath

I also love this idea! I originally ordered the 160 but decided on the Midwest’s for more space. I didn’t know you could combine them! Now we’re onto a c&c cage!

He wont have to bend at all with this set up. You can get a 6x2 on a 6ft table (half a grid overhangs each end but ive never had a problem with this. ive a base of grids on my cage so its not an issue.)
