Emergency Bloat Advice!

Just got off the phone with the vets - she's just had the scan and it's still there. So they are going to try and aspirate the cyst now - I should know how it's gone in about an hour and I'll let you all know ...

Fingers crossed! And as always thanks for the support xx

Just back off the phone again - so she'd had some gas, everything was set to aspirate - the vet had manipulated the cyst toward the body wall gently - then when they went back to do the needle the cyst had vanished. So it's burst.

They are going to wake her up now and I'll be tuning back in an hour to see how things are going - will her body be okay absorbing that liquid? Is it going to cause her a lot of pain?

As far as I am aware it is ok. My Millie has had cysts burst and no ill effect.

I have her home with me :)

Eating drinking pooing and seems relaxed!

Ill be watching her like a hawk for the next day or so to make sure there's no reaction to the gas or anything else

Fingers crossed! Feels great to have her back even though she was only gone for a day

Ohhh so happy she's home with you and doing well!

Still a slight bit of bloating on the left hand side, but I'm hoping that will just start to go down and stay down now the cyst is gone.

We have another appointment on Monday for *fingers xrossed* a final checkup!

She's taken me through the mill and back over this last nearly 6 weeks but I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel xx

So I still have a hollow little pig on my hands.

Still eating pooong drinking and exploring as normal

I am completely at a loss as to why we can't shift it but also why it doesn't seem to be affecting her.

Is hollow noise ever something to not be concerned about? Is she just going to be prone to a bit of gassing after everything that has gone on?

Just as I feel like we were getting somewhere!

That's okay piggy lover - none of it makes sense! How can everything be on the outside fine but she is stil just a little gas ball - although she's not puffed up and hunched.

I hope things with you okay and you're doing well x

its very strange isn't it? I'm fine thankyou xx luigi is now bonded with two baby sows so at least he isn't depressed anymore xx if shes well in herself id try not to worry too much about her you've had a very bad couple of mths xx

So glad you've managed to bond him :) what are the girls names?

Yeah trying not to feel too overwhelmed with worrying - she's definitely having some uncomfortable moments, but keeping up with the meds and massages. Hopefully the vet thinks of some answers on Monday!
Xx

really hope you get some answers tomorrow x they are called honey and caramel and are really very sweet they came at the right time as luigi was starting to go downhill he was losing weight and and getting very depressed but now hes a completely different pig xx .

Thanks so much, will update after the appointment - she's still hollow :(

Lovely names! So glad ta helped luigi so much I hope they help you all too x

FINALLY SOME GOOD NEWS!

So from late last night the hollow noise had gone, and as of today it still isn't here.

I've just got back from the vets, our schedualed appointment from last week - she gave her a long examination and couldn't feel any unwanted lumps or bumps, she's not in any discomfort when her abdomen is manipulated.
Good gut sounds etc.

Her hair in general is still a little thin (we can see a bit more skin in between partings etc than we used to) but hopefully that will begin to thicken up again now.

HER WEIGHT IS BACK TO NORMAL! At her sickest during all of this she had gone down to 900 grams at one point - she is now back up to 1002!

Where do we go from here?
So her bloating has seemed to act in a cycle, she's been going from not bloated to bloated without any obvious triggers. We are hoping though as this is the first time we've got no hollow noise since her cyst ruptured that it is going to stay that way. But the action plan is as follows:

  • Taken off the Zantac and metacam for today - judge how she reacts, check there is still a good poo count, if poos are down or she seems puffy reintroduce the Zantac
  • We are stopping nuggets from now on, she is currently having thickened critical care from a bowl and is eating it well - we think that maybe after this the starch in nuggets she just won't be able to handle
  • Very very small amounts of veg for now, thin slice of cucumber, small amount of herbs - building very slowly to see how we go
  • Ringing the vets again at the end of the week to give them an update

I just wanted to say the biggest thank you to everyone that has contributed to this thread:

@Pebble @VickiA @Wiebke @helen105281 @piggylover @GPTV @Poppy'sMum

And everyone else sorry hard to find the names of everyone when writing on a mobile.

Your support emotionally and also medically over this emmensely hard time has been invaluable, and you have helped to save her life - I'm so very grateful.

It's still going to be a long road to recovery, as things could still go backwards now she's stopped the medication. But fingers firmly crossed!

That's wonderful news.

If you did want to reintroduce nuggets at any point I would go for a grainless version, preferably Bunny, if not Vitakraft Emotion prebiotic or J R Farms as grains can disturb the gut and cause bloating.

Thanks Helen I will look into those brands :) are the Bunny ones literally just called that? - are they specifically guinea pig not just rabbit nuggets?

And thank you again for everything from both of us x

That is wonderful news! :yahoo:

What to do now:
- keep her on the diet you know works, but have her meds and syringe feed etc. handy in case things blow up again and if necessary ask your vet for a new batch if the old ones get out of date after 6 months; that is what I am doing with my Ffraid who has had issues for the last couple of years, but especially the last year.
- She is likely to retain a more sensitive digestion and have more bouts in the future, but as long as you know what she responds best to, you will hopefully be able to keep it under control and get on top of it better, and it will hopefully never again as bad as this time.
- as time goes on and she becomes more stable, you can very slowly re-introduce more fresh food to see what agrees with her in what amount. You have to start back in square one after each new bout.

Ohhhh what wonderful news!! Hoping she stays on this positive course!:yahoo:

Yay I'm so glad she is finally on the mend  and its all thanks to having such a loving great piggy parent who stayed up all hours for months trying to get her well again x

Sorry for no replies guys, was trying to catch up on work then didn't have internet access!

Just an update on scruff, it seems as though her guts weren't quite ready to go medication free. We are back on the Zantac, but she is still a happy pig - @helen105281 I ordered her those bunny nuggets and they arrived on Wednesday, she loves them :) just having a couple at the moment though.

This was the worrying sound from her side last night:

Couldn't upload the video on here, so this is it on YouTube

I've not contributed, as I can't, but I am sending out my very best wishes. Seems like your got over the biggest hurdles, and it's a case of maintenance through diet. Sorry she's back on Zantac. Could you wean her off very very slowly?

Aw bless - Scruff enjoying her massage :)

It's the 'wetness' sound in that video that worries me - it's been there once or twice before. Anyone have a clue what it is?

Yeah I had slowly weened her down over about 4 days before we finally took her off.

Does anyone know if there are any affects long term of being on Zantac? @Pebble maybe?

I can't watch the video at work unfortunately but could you hold her and gently rock her up and down. If her belly sloshes it could be fluid bloat in which case she would need to see the vet today. In my experience, in some cases long term gut meds can cause other issues.

Glad she likes the Bunny.

That was the first thing I checked, no sloshy with gentle rocking - the wetness sound had just been once or twice over this process and only in one small area.

She is still pooing weeing eating and drinking absolutely fine.

And yes I am concerned at possible side issues we now may cause
