Sadly, my five year old Ceri has developed a full blown bloat. I've had her on dentinox (zantac) since last evening as well as hand feeding/watering her little but often throughout the late evening and in the night, but she continued ballooning up, so we made an emergency trip to our local vets this morning.
There she was given an injection of metoclopramide and baytril (I don't want any oral baytril at the moment, but the antibiotic is necessary in case her condition causes an infection in the guts and the vet thought that septrin was too slow for the job). No signs of lesions/rush on the tongue and mouth that could have caused the loss of appetite. Ceri has been very obliging to make a few decent sized (for the circumstances) fresh poos at the vets to prove that she's not suffering from a bockage and that her guts also haven't gone into stasis; she's also not dehydrated.

Now it is a waiting game, hoping that the meds kick in while keeping her guts going as much as possible. I am trying to get her to roam a little bit around the living room and am also gently vibrating her belly to help shifting the gas.

I've just found out that my leftover fibreplex has gone out of date, so I will have to order more to help stabilise her guts over the next few weeks. :(

Since I lost Bethan a month ago to the day and Rhosyn just a week after, I am sincerely hoping that at least this girl will pull through!

Like you say - bloat is such an unpredictable thing... even with the best of round-the-clock care that I can provide without crashing out, it may not be enough! :(

I know you're a piggy expert but when Minky had bloat in December I used an old vibrating type electric toothbrush on her tummy while I had her laid on her back. She got great relief from this & would object when I went to turn her over an hour or so later.

How far is the Fibreplex out of date. Generally you can go a few months over but squeeze some out & check first. It always happens on a weekend! I know there's quite a few forum members in your area, maybe someone nearby can help out with some Fibreplex.

I'm sending my best healing vibes for Ceri, get well soon.

The fibreplex is definitely no longer usable. Good idea with the toothbrush. Not sure whether I can get hub to go out tomorrow to get one, though!

Everything crossed for you hun.You are having such a carp time at the moment. KEEP YOUR CHIN UP

I hope Ceri get better for you and sending her the best healing vibes i can! x

What causes bloat

It's usually caused by too many greens such as cabbage. It can also occur if you give them too much grass after not having any over winter. Probably won't apply this winter as I only stop giving them grass if we have a prolonged period of cold weather with heavy frosts. I don't think we've had more than 7 or 8 nights of frost all winter on Teesside. It's the mildest I think we've ever had. Also bloat can happen like in the case of Minky when she was on lots of different meds & this played havoc with her digestive system. That's when I used the electric toothbrush on her together with Boots baby gripe water.

What causes bloat

It can be due to veg and fruit that piggy guts are unused to like cabbage, cauliflower leaves or too much rich green spring grass on an untrained tummy - always introduce new foods in small quantities and not on their own so the guts can get accustomed to them.

Sometimes there is no obvious reason, especially in older piggies who can develop a more delicate digestion. :mal:

Fingers and paws all crossed here for ceri (&you)
Just a thought but if you have no electric toothbrush... What about an.old mobile phone underneath vibrating or a ride in the car to give some movement?
If you have kids with an old Lego set motor you could rig up to sit her on...maybe the top of the washing machine on the spin cycle might help until something more permanent can be arranged.
Come on ceri get well soon :) fro the girls & I.
Xx

I am letting Ceri amble around the living room during feeds, so she gets some movement. She's not very keen on experiencing my manual version of vibrating, though! :)

At least she is still pooing, which is a good sign!

Fingers, toes and paws very firmly crossed here.

Can your hubby take you both out for a car ride to help with the vibrations?

If things are no better by tomorrow I may ask him.

I really hope she pulls through. Fingers tightly crossed.

In times of need when Esme ended up quote bloaty with her heart probs and subsequently not many poops I found that when I used the vibrate function on my phone (gently around her sides and tum) that she got some relief from that, as well as gently shaking my legs whilst she was sat there. In her case it wasn't full blown bloat but it definitely helped her .
