Fred&HarryPigs
Junior Guinea Pig
Hi
I'm looking for any support or I suppose encouragement. We are already in contact with a vet regarding these issues and I know no one here is qualified to give veterinary advice.
On Tuesday evening Winnie had a sudden onset of bloat. She has never had this before or any of my other pigs, this is all new to me but I knew what the signs were. Luckily I was able to get her seen at the vets within 1 hour.
She stayed at the vets for 24 hours for syringe feeding and medication. She came home Wednesday evening. When she came home she was very smelly and wet from where she had been sitting in wee. Her urine smelt very stale.
She has been very quiet and sleepy. She has started to nibble on hay but not loads or as much as she should. I have been syringe feeding every 2-3 hours and during the night. Probably getting approx 30ml a day , which I know is not the recommended amount but she puts up a fight.
I’ve been weighing her every morning. She lost approx 100g during the first 24 hours and now is sitting between 1175 and this morning 1167g. She was 1320g.
She is drinking from her water bottle and taking little bit of water from the syringe between feeds.
She is on a 0.4ml dose of dog metacam twice daily (vet said I can increase to 0.5ml) and cisapride 0.13ml per day.
She has now started weeing blood, this is not unusual as she is a bladder pig with history of UTI and sludge and I expect IC. Phoned the vets this morning who has issued an antibiotic to treat the suspected UTI and more cisapride in case this causes her stomach to unsettle again. I know antibiotics are not great on the stomach so I am worried about the reoccurrence of bloat, but I’m in a catch 22 situation.
The vet thinks that the bloat was initially caused by bladder discomfort as she has been having a flare up.
We are seeing the exotic vet again on Monday morning where I will request and X-ray or ultrasound to see what is going on.
My question is, does this sound “normal” or what would be expected following a bloat episode, I know no two cases are the same. However the eating and tiredness is this expected?
To add, I’ve been trying poop soup and also giving probiotics and Fibreplex to help settle her stomach. It doesn’t help that her sister and cagemate Honey has decided to be little bit of a bully towards her.
I’m thankful for any support or experiences any one can offer.
