Dental Blodwen - dental and ringworm

Well a dreadful day all round really, as well as my mum being taken into hospital last night, Blodwen's vet check wasn't too good... her ringworm looks clear but she has 2 more weeks of antifungal (this time a mycozole spray we mist her with then massage in to get to the bits we can't see) then a skin culture to get the all clear. The teeth won't wait... head vet Clare thinks her teeth are in a state where it is stopping her eating any hay so emergency dental surgery Friday... she thinks her misaligned jaw has caused dental spurs which are now actually causing her jaw to grow more misaligned all the time... poor Blod pig! Emergency teethy surgery in the next free small animal surgery slot is not what we hoped for but I guess this is why her previous owner dumped her in the free ads under false pretences...

Oh dear. I hope your Mum's OK @PigglePuggle. It must be a worrying time for you.

Poor Blodpig she must be so uncomfortable be prepared for syringe feeding when she comes back from the vet. At least she only has 2 more weeks of antifungal left. I wish her luck in her teethy surgery.

I’ve merged a couple of threads @PigglePuggle so that everything relating to poor Blod’s health is in the one place. It makes it easier for us all to follow and find what has been said before.

Thats so sad about the pervious owner, she has basicly treated blod like an old car and scrapped her. I'm rooting for your pig so bad

Sending healing vibes to Blodwen and your Mum. I hope the surgery goes well.

Sending hugs to the piggie slaves 'cause I know how stressful sick piggies are, you are both doing a fantastic job with your gorgeous herd. Blodwen is a lucky piggy to have landed with you two.

I’m so sorry that her teeth are so bad. She must be a real fighter to have survived so far. And your vet seems to be on the ball. Just make sure to ask for plenty of pain relief post surgery and again be set for syringe feeding, soaking pellets and cutting veg into matchstick sized pieces.
Once this little girl has clear skin, a clear mouth and can eventually meet her new furry family she is going to think she is in piggy heaven.

In amid all the bad news about Blod I missed the bit about your Mum. I am so sorry. Is she somewhere nearby so you can get to see her easily?

Can a guinea pig jaw re- allign?
Yes, if the teeth are filed correctly, giving proper jaw movement. The problem can be, if the jaw has been out of alignment for a long time, then it tends to slip back very easily, as the muscles aren't working correctly either. The only way to get it back into the correct position is to keep tidying up the mouth, so that the piggy eats as normally as possible. In time, the jaw will then become aligned properly. Dental issues aren't resolved with one treatment.

HUGS!

Sadly your experience is anything but unusual... :(

All the best with the dental operation. How experienced is your vet in this area?

Mum's in our local hospital, she'll be coming home soon but she's on palliative care now so we don't know how much longer she'll be with us, hopefully another year but no guarantees- but she's still more worried about Blodwen pig than herself!
If Blod pig was human she would need orthodontic braces, glasses, and therapy- but she's a guinea big so I imagine she'll need her teeth filing down every few months. The vet mentioned she might carry some dodgy inbred genes a bit like a pink-eyed white and she's probably a bit of a special needs pig and might not see too well or be quite right... but the teeth are the priority and until she comes out of ringworm quarantine and gets a normal herd life we won't know for sure!

Thanks! I am confident that the first vet spotted the dental problem on her first check up as something to keep an eye on without us mentioning teeth, and the head vet looked again today and with no hesitation said "it needs doing this week" and booked her in. They routinely do back teeth dental exams with no anaesthetic but will give Blod a GA for the procedure, they didnt hesitate to offer the surgery straight away... I trust them with GA anyway as Theo's neutering went perfectly...

The only good news (took me a while to think of some) is that Blodwen has only lost 40g in weight in 11 days of rehoming stress and quarantine and ringworm treatment and unexpected dental problems... and she really loves syringe feeds and eating grapes and beansprouts!

:agr:
Hope the ringworm clears up asap and the dental work goes well. It's sweet of your mum to be more concerned about Blodwyn piggy than herself. Methinks you need some of Roo's strengthening medicine to help you over the next few weeks

Piggy daddy is doing all the syringe feeds, I do the mean nasty skin ointments :) but if the dental surgery is urgent I'm very glad she's already got used to guzzling down 10mls of critical care plus being hand fed a chopped up grape and beansprouts and grated cucumber 3 times a day!

Has anyone else been prescribed mycozole spray for ringworm? It was expensive but looks a nice big bottle, up to 50 doses, and it is actually for guinea pigs and other small furries... same active ingredient as surolan, but hopefully less messy and more precise dosing- 1 squirt for every 200g of piggy weight... we'll be trying it on Blodwen later this evening!

Sorry to hear about your mum. Spend the time you have making memories with her.

Sending healing vibes for Blodwen, hope the vet can sort out her teeth. She has been through so much for a little piggy, she deserves some happiness.

Blodwen is such a daddy's girl, and today is piggy daddy's birthday- and for the first time today Blod came out of her hidey house on her own and was playing in the hay tray waiting for daddy when he came home from work! Now she's sitting on his chest eating grated sweet potatoes :) happy birthday piggy daddy!

I'm so sorry to hear about your mum. Bloddypig needs to get the ringworm all clear so she can share some piggy love with Piggy Granny as well as Piggy Daddy.

Fingers crossed for Friday.

Vets tomorrow for Blodwen's teeth operation... please send Blod some healing vibes or wheeks or prayers... I just have an awful feeling this could be her last night with us, and we hardly know her yet, she's lived with us in ringworm quarantine for exactly 2 weeks now... I feel awful sending in her in for teeth surgery just when she's starting to act a bit normal and trust us, but the vet really thinks the dental surgery is urgent and best done straight away and before she meets the other piggies... she's eating grape slices and beansprouts and spinach and critical care right now, early morning feed tomorrow then vet drop-off at 8.30am and lots of awful waiting...
