Blood In Urine And Ill Piggie

Hi, today our vet called us, which I thought was nice, just to check up on Chico. Now Chico has improved a little bit. He's starting to hold his weight around 900g on his own, he's eating veggies and his wees have no blood in them. However he still is acting uncomfortable before urinating. The vet also told us that the 2nd urinalysis came back well with no signs of blood or anything unusual. He did mention protein again though.
Just because we were on the phone I decided to mention an x ray. He told us it would be £29 for an x ray and that we could stop by tomorrow morning. Chico is going to be there for a couple of hours and we are to collect him tomorrow afternoon. He said he would also try not to use anaesthetic on him unless he really wouldn't stay still but I have a feeling he won't! So we are stopping by there tomorrow morning just to make sure he definitely doesn't have them. Wish us luck and I'll update you when I have any results.
 
I forgot to mention that Chico has nearly finished his course of baytril, loxicom and another treatment that I can't remember. He is on for a 10 day course so should be finished on Thursday. :);) Xxxxx
 
He may need a longer course, but it is good to do an x-ray if recovery is slow. Best of luck! Even at the worst, Chico will only get a light whiff of gas, so he won't be put under fully like for an operation. ;)
 
Chico is at the vets now. We pick him up at two just so we can see his x rays. x wish us luck xx

There are three small stones in his bladder. However he said he isn't going to try surgery just yet since the stones are small and hopefully with the help of some medication should dissolve the stones. He said if that doesn't work then he will opt for surgery. He took three x rays but only charged us the price of one. We are feeding him cranberry juice with water to help his bladder. Someone's gonna have an empty bank account after all of this :bronco:
 
Our vet showed us a bag that was full of bladder stones that he had removed from a jack russell. There were so many! I'm glad Chico only has three little ones because the dog must have been in so much pain! I don't think he had to use anaesthetic on Chico as he never mentioned it. x
 
I am sorry to hear that Chico has small stones. If your vet doesn't feel the need to operate, all you can do is keep on with the medication but be prepared that he may need a longer course than 10 days and septrin will be the better antibiotic.

If it helps, my Enoch had a smaller than a pin head bladder stone. The vet advised us not to operate but he was on a septrin and metacam for four weeks. Touch wood, thankfully he's ok now.
 
Thank you @Claire W . Sorry, I forgot to mention that he is on baytril again for another week after his course finishes tomorrow. He said the oral solution will arrive at the vets to either tomorrow or the day after. That is apparently (hopefully) going to break down the stones so he can pass them. He said everything else looked good though (kidney, stomach etc). He told us that at one point he owned 13 guinea pigs so I feel comfortable that he has experience with them. He said he has also operated on male and female guinea pigs to remove stones which also makes me feel confident. x
 
Off to get chicos stone dissolving medication tomorrow. x
 
Hi, so we have chicos medicine. Our vet spoke to someone who specialises in guinea pig medication and she told him what to prescribe Chico. He has been given a potassium citrate oral solution which he needs 0.06ml once a day for two months. Hopefully it's going to break down and dissolve his stones. If not then surgery is the option. His medication is human medication but it's supposed to work. x
 
Potassium citrate is sometimes prescribed. I am keeping my fingers crossed for you!
 
I don't think Potassium Citrate dissolves stones :( What it does is clump the calcium together so it will pass through their system, which if your boy has stones might not be a good thing depending on their size. @flintstones as her boy was given this I think. My bladder pig has a dose twice a day of Potasium Citrate, you need to get the right one, it's the Care brand with a woman's tummy on the front, not all Pharmacies sell it, but Co-Op & Lloyds do. It definitely makes her pass a lot of calcium, but she has no stones, just a gritty bladder with flare ups x
