Bonding -rabbits.

Did you collect the other rabbit today?

Unfortunately no :bye: turns out there was 'confusion' as to what we'd be doing with him and they felt it was better to take him to the RSPCA. Just hope that whoever gives him a home from there will keep him this time- he's lovely.

Chili is a boy ad Daisy is a girl,so we did go with the mixed sex pairing.
However here (in Switzerland) the issue is slightly complicated by the fact that you can't buy and un-neutered male (which is fantastic obviously), but it is all but impossible to get your female rabbit spayed.
We contacted several vets for this procedure, but because all males are neutered it is deemed 'unnecessary' and costs a fortune (a standard spay costs in excess of 500 pounds here).
So we were actually told that 2 neutered males was also a good option?
You may need to border hop if you were ever considering Daisy for a spay. Can't give you an exact price but definitely cheaper.

I have bonded several rabbits and am about to bond a quad this weekend hopefully. Two males and two females. Older neutered males are usually not too tricky to bond, females tend to be more tricky. Just like piggies they need to sort out their hierarchy.
As long as one is prepared to submit to the other it's usually straightforward. The problems occur if they are equally dominant.
Do the initial introduction in a small completely neutral area. I set up a pen in the kitchen.
Have gloves and a towel ready in case you need to separate them quickly.
Chasing, humping and nipping of fur is normal but watch out for frenzied circling, they can get into a fight. Watch carefully for as long as necessary, this might mean sleeping nearby, once the initial chasing etc settles you may find that they will start to sit close to each other and groom at the same time. This is a sign of them being relaxed. Once they start grooming each other you have cracked it.
Don't move them into their final home for a week or so to let the bond consolidate, you may find things will kick off again if you move them too soon.
Good luck.
How are you getting on with bonding the bunnies?

It seems an easy bond but l have had some horrible ones before! They have been together 24 hours! Are you going to get another Bunny?
I am looking at the moment. Emailed SSPCA but seemingly have to speak to Rehoming. I’d asked whether they have neutered boys plus whether they did bonding there. Thought they’d know! Still have the Minilop people in Edinburgh to get back in touch with. Not many actual rescues up here!

Good luck. We have lots of lovely boys needing good homes in Barnsley. Babies as well

I realise spaying guinea pigs is a very tricky procedure and not many vets practise it but what about spaying rabbits? I'm very upset that we weren't able to get Renly and try him with Bigwig but I'd still very much like to get a rabbit companion for Bigwig. However, with him being 6/7 years old I don't really want him to go under anaesthetic for the neutering procedure. Is spaying a female rabbit a procedure that can be done or is it like with guinea pigs not done by many vets? (I've never owned a female rabbit before) or is it possible to get a male to bond with him- and if so is a baby better like with guinea pigs? :)

Just had my Flossie spayed 6 days ago and she is fine!
It is recommended not just for having a companion with them but to prevent uterine problems in later life.Same procedure as carried out with dogs and cats!
You've just to be careful for the first 24 hours that you get some nourishment into them with Fibreplex or similar so they don't get but stasis.
It is still usual though to have both rabbits spayed/neutered to prevent too much humping!
@barc bonds rabbits so would be able to advise too.

As @Janice C says spaying female rabbits is recommended as it prevents uterine cancer and also makes bonding easier (intact rabbits tend to have phantom pregnancies which is very stressful for them).
However having an unneutered buck with a spayed doe is likely to be problematic as he will probably keep humping her and spray her with urine, she will soon get fed up and likely to be aggressive to him or become depressed herself. We always recommend neutering both rabbits in a pairing whatever their sex. Neutering of male rabbits is much more straightforward than in guinea pigs. We neuter all our male rabbits and rarely is there a problem. But of course use an experienced vet.
An unneutered male with a neutered male is similarly likely to fail whatever the age. Two mature neutered males may work but it again depends on personality. The two males (both 4 years plus) that I am bonding in my quad are getting on very well.
Its great that you are considering getting Bigwig a friend but I think you do need to get him neutered. Feel free to message me if you want to discuss things further.

We rehome anywhere providing we can assess the home you are offering adequately.
It' Barnsley animal rescue charity Hoyland Barnsley just off J 36 M1
Hubby has had the map out!
Have been trying up here though but some of the online sites don’t seem to function very well! Spent ages putting all my details into one which took me 40 mins, pressed Submit but no idea where it went!
Seriously though, how does it work over such a distance? Would take us 4 hours to get to you, hubby thinks. How would we know if you have any suitable buns? My Flossie is obviously a house bun and I'm looking for a smallish male as a friend - mainly so they’ve plenty room to exercise. She also has a safe garden with access from her room.

Sounds wonderful! I run the guinea pig part of the rescue. You need to speak to Angie who runs the rabbit rescue l will message you her contact details.
Basically you have a chat about the bunnies we have available and Angie can advise on one likely to be a good match.
Then she needs info such as photos of your set up, a reference from your vet, that kind of thing.
Some of the rabbits available are on our website barnsleyanimalrescue.org.uk/re-home-a-rabbit/
You can reserve but not adopt at the moment as its Christmas.
Make sure your bunny is neutered and fully vaccinated as that will speed the adoption process.
I will give you my number as well if you would like a chat.
