I had a phone call from my vets today saying that a member of the public had found a very wet bedraggled guinea pig (it was out in all the rain) and had taken it to them. The vet asked if I would like to have it, I said yes if it is a sow as I couldn't have another boar. She turned out to be a gorgeous little creamy coloured thing with a black/brown smudge on her nose. Little thing is a understatement, she doesn't have any hair on her belly and her coat is bald in places with what I assume is mites of some sort. The vets cut her nails as they were wound round three times, they still need more taken off. I think she had been neglected and dumpedpow-pow. It makes me so flippin angry, why do they do thispow-powpow-pow. I just had to give her a bath as she was going mad scratching herself. I don't think she has been handled at all as she was jumping and scratching to get away from me. She is now in a nice warm cage with lots of nice hay (which she hasn't stopped munching since she got here). What would be the best veggie type food to tempt her with anyone got any ideas?. As she is very thin I don't want to give her veggies that may upset her stomach. The lady that found her named her Boo as her little boy used to go the cage and say boo! so going to keep that name as it seems to suit her. I will try and get a piccie up sometime.:)p

AWWW that's so sad! How can people do that?

I would suggest something like coriander as it's fairly light and may be good to tempt her with to start with?

Good for you - I can't wait to see a photo and hope she perks up very soon.

Keep us posted I will be thinking about her.

Try a bit of parsley or some blades of grass! Perhaps later on you can try a small slice of carrot, as most piggies like it. But you are right to start slowly, as in her weakened state she can't afford a tummy upset.

Stories like that make me very angry too - it's not that difficult to ring a rescue and sign over your pet!

I sincerely hope that poor Boo makes it through under your good care despite the long term neglect she's been suffering!

All the best - and a happy welcome on here!

I'd go with some Parsley. They all seem to go nuts for it.

She sounds like she's going to be a major sweety!
I hope you can show us some pictures when she's feeling a little better.

Good for you, too! Taking her on like that!
I'm happy to hear that she's gone to a loving home...It sounds like she's had a hard time...
The poor little darling.

I bet she's going to be a cheeky one, though.
Once she's better and her personality comes out, I can imagine her being a cheeky piggy xx>>> all the cute ones are!

Wait...Aren't they ALL cute?!

Oh, very sad that she was in that position, but very happy that she found you!

I would be very pleased if that ever happened to me. I would think it was fate.

Well done for taking care of her. Look forward to seeing some photos when she has settled in. Are you keeping her, or is that a silly question?

awwwww i'm so glad the piggie is ok now and i hope it all goes wellx

lookind forward to picsx

Oh thats so sad poor little Boo (love the name), can't wait to see the piccies, lots of hugs to Boo and you!

Boo's luck has changed for the better in being united with you, bless her. I really hope she's strong enough to recover from her experiences and problems. Can't wait to see pics.

Thank you for taking her in. :)

Poor Boo.

It really is beyond me how anyone could just dump any animal like that...arghghhg....makes me so cross.

She's lucky to have found you!

x

Thanks guys for all the encouraging words about Boo, its what makes this forum great:). Update on her today, she is eating loads and loads of hay and she has had a few blades of grass. I have offered her bits of carrot and cucumber but she is not interested in veg of any sort. I hope she will eventually. In reply to Goldie, yes I am keeping her, she is not going anywhere nowx). Apparently (I didn't know this beforehand) the vet said she was going to get a block for £50 from the RSPCA so if Boo needs any more treatment which is in connection with the state she was found the RSPCA pays for it. The vets didn't Ivomec her, which I thought they might have done as I am sure she has skin mites, she has little bite marks on her body. Perhaps they have to be a bit more healthy to have that do they? I'm not sure as never had a piggie as thin as this before. I will try and get a piccie up, but not sure how to do it now not having put one up for a while, age and memory doesn't help:)p

I am glad that she's settling and her diarrhea is better.

It is worth to introduce her to one new veg/green at the time and leave it lying around for a day or two, so she can get used to the smell. Then serve it again the following week or the week after. Eventually, she'll catch on!

I vaguely remember a thread about mites treatment for a pregnant sow in the health/illness section not so long ago.

hi, glad you saved her! i hate it when people neglect guinea pigs, but it's also good to find them! but anyway i would get the mite spray thingy, (i would get someone elses advice too though!) my friend used it and it seemed to work! but anyway what do you meen tempt her with, and why don't you want to feed her? have you gave her some nugets? sorry if there are too many q's! also get someone elses appinion as well as mine, cause i can some times be wrong(everyone can be!) anway good luck! cya:(p!

Hi Pigpig479, yes of course I want to feed her:), but I don't want to overload her stomach as she is so thin. Last night I put some dried food in her pen and she ate some of it and also some dried herbs, still eating loads of hay. I had to give her another bath today, using GG Lice shampoo and putting aloe vera gel on her skin. She is still scratching but perhaps not quite as much. I also took the bull by the horns so to speak and Dremeled her nails as they were digging into her when she scratched. She was ever so good, squealed a lot, but I held her in a towel with just feet sticking out so now her nails are normal length. I can now also put my hand in the pen and very gently stroke the top of her head without her running away, she seems to like it as she half closes her eyes. She is going to be so, so beautifulx)
Boo is now eating bits of veg.:)p:)p:)p

I'm so glad to hear Boo is coming along well. So glad you are looking after her, thankyou for telling us how she is doing. Looking forward to pictures too!
