Hello,

My little Ginger broke her nail at some point today. I realised after checking her over when I’m doing her daily hibiscrub behind her ears.

(my pigs had a recent bout of hay mites and it left Ginger with sore ears, thankfully her ears are nearly fully healed)

Her nail looks okay, it’s not fully down to the root and she’s walking and running. It looks a little sore (red/purple coloured). It looks like she didn’t bleed a lot either. I used some hibiscrub to clean it up (left it on for 5 and then washed off).

It’s the second nail from the left, you can’t really tell from the pic (a good thing I guess)

I’m always on top of keeping their cage clean and tidy so that’s not a worry for me.

Is there anything else I can use or is hibiscrub okay for now?

Thanks

Hi

No, you have done the right thing to disinfect. Just leave it be.

She's obviously not ripped the nail off and the quick doesn't look badly injured if the bleeding has stopped pretty quickly. :tu:

Thank you for the reassurance! It’s been an awfully stressful week trying to stay on top of the hay mites and Gingers irritated ears. A broken nail is the last thing I need 😖 Luckily an end is in sight as her ears are nearly healed and the mites are hopefully nearly gone. Cleaned religiously, hot washes on, hay thrown out and medication applied 🙃

The first time Jemimah had floor time she managed to tear out a nail.
I did what you did and wiped it with antiseptic and it healed nicely.
I was more bothered than she was.
Glad the mites have been successfully treated and the ear is nearly better.
I’m sure a guinea pig’s mission in life is to age us 10 years !

Definitely. I’m sure I’ve aged 30 in the past few years 😂😂
