This evening I was inspecting the guinea pigs when I discovered that Salvatore has a broken tooth, upper right. Broken off near the gum line. The other teeth look fine, and had I not been looking in his mouth, I would not have known there was anything wrong. He eats well. He has no complaints. I really do not know when or how he broke it as the two of them do not stay in the same enclosure so there is no fighting, and none of his food is of the type to break teeth, just hay, pellets, and fresh vegetables and fruit. I did see him nibbling the cage bars yesterday, but that didn't last long. I guess he could have broken it during a similar action to which I was not witness.
From what I see, there is nothing that can be done, so I guess my question is, does a broken tooth grow out quickly? I am assuming that, because the teeth are constantly having to be shortened by gnawing and they are always growing, this tooth will be replaced and all will be well.
I did put a new hidey in his cage the other day, one with wooden legs on it. I guess I had better go check that out for gnaw marks or tooth parts stuck in it.
