This evening I was inspecting the guinea pigs when I discovered that Salvatore has a broken tooth, upper right. Broken off near the gum line. The other teeth look fine, and had I not been looking in his mouth, I would not have known there was anything wrong. He eats well. He has no complaints. I really do not know when or how he broke it as the two of them do not stay in the same enclosure so there is no fighting, and none of his food is of the type to break teeth, just hay, pellets, and fresh vegetables and fruit. I did see him nibbling the cage bars yesterday, but that didn't last long. I guess he could have broken it during a similar action to which I was not witness.

From what I see, there is nothing that can be done, so I guess my question is, does a broken tooth grow out quickly? I am assuming that, because the teeth are constantly having to be shortened by gnawing and they are always growing, this tooth will be replaced and all will be well.

I did put a new hidey in his cage the other day, one with wooden legs on it. I guess I had better go check that out for gnaw marks or tooth parts stuck in it.

I have no experience with broken teeth, but from what I've heard they usually seem to grow back quickly without problems. If you're worried have him looked at by the vet.

I've had guinea pigs loose their upper incisors before and from experience I had no complications and the teeth were back to normal within a matter of wheeks

Robbie has broken both his top front teeth right off. They're growing back quite quickly but do I have to do anything with his bottom teeth? Wont they get really long before the top teeth grow back properly?

Thanks Hanwombat, that's a really useful link and has put my mind at rest. Robbie is a lovely, healthy piggie who has recently clashed with his cage mate, so I'm hopeful his teeth will grow back normally. xx>>> xx

That is a very reassuring link and reinforces my thought that if he is eating normally well and I didn't know there was a problem until I looked in his mouth, he will be just fine as his tooth grows back. FYI - After closer scrutiny of his food, I noticed that the corn on the cob could have been the culprit if he got his tooth down past the corn and into the cob. He could have broken the tooth trying to get the cob out of his mouth. Still didn't see a tooth fragment tho.

Oooo deary. I have never, (and hopefully touch wood will never) had any experience with teeth problems.....hope salvatore is feeling okay! x

Our Piggy broke a front tooth and it grew back fast, you just need to check it grows back straight so no problems arise from a wonky tooth.

I can't believe how quickly Robbie's top teeth are growing back. He's already eating more normally (is that grammatically correct?!). At this rate he should be back to normal by the weekend. Yeh!

Hello all, it is very difficult for me to check in to the forum as I no longer have Internet service at my house and have to use the computers at the public library. The library system has blocked all social interaction sites including this one, and unless I can find a back door to the site I can't visit. This post will probably register as "guest" if it posts at all. Anyway, I just wanted to follow up on the broken tooth - in fewer than 14 days it was grown back fully, like nothing had ever happened. I say fewer than 14 days because I didn't check it again until then so I don't know exactly when it returned.

our board broke his teeth several times,it take 2-3 weeks to grow them back.
Months later he dies as we been told from cancer,we don't know if was co-incidents.
