Brownie

Give him a wider variety of veg in his diet every day - it helps with hydration but also nutrients. He can have lettuce, cucumber, bell pepper and coriander every day.
The amount of pellets he has is fine - they can have one tablespoon so if he is only having five then you certainly aren’t giving him too many.

Do keep in mind that going too low in calcium intake can also cause problems for them - when it is too low the balance in the diet can still be wrong as much as when intake is too high

I don’t feed mine any pellets, so because of that, I make sure I give plenty of veg every day. I also do give them high calcium veggies to make sure they are still getting what they need.

Hiya guys thankyou !
I feed pallets daily 5/6 per pig
I aslo feed cucumber and pepper daily …
I went vets yesterday brownie seems to be doing better they said don’t know if it’s a stone but 1 lady thinks it may be , I think it’s 100% a stone as he seems more himself … they ask to do ultrasound £172! That’s including the consultation 😩
I told them I can’t afford as me and brownie have had so many vet trips this month I’m left a little skint to afford it right now
They said that’s fine , I’m worried there is still stones inside and he’s gonna get worst again
I told i don’t know how I’ll afford surgery hospital stays and antibiotics after as it’s so expensive
I have been able to work neither for a month just had my appendix taken out so I’m off work so really stressed 😩
He seems okay with him self now
He’s doing little wees , he’s not weeing as much as when he was in pain but he is weeing it’s just not a lot more I’m not noticing I’m just hoping he can get better , seen people saying £1000 for surgery
Which is a lot of money! I know they said I can do payment plan they haven’t told me a price yet as haven’t done a scan to know if there’s more stones
Seen people say all different guess depends on the vets also,
Brownie is definitely more active
I gave him some dandelion leafs from what I got from shop I search up says very high in calcium so worried it’s gonna cause stones to come back
He had some today and yesterday only in tiny amounts , I’m gonna try do everything I can to give him a good diet to prevent this I know it just happens
Also just heard brownies belly making noises sound like gas? I’m guessing
Only just heard that is that normal? Or should I be worried … I feel awful that I couldn’t do the scan but I’m so worried how much this is all gonna cost especially with me not having work as I’ve had surgery 😂😂😩, I’m hoping he starts to feel a little himself more now and hope we don’t get any more problems 🤞🏽
If he’s being active
Eating hay
Drinking
Zoomies EARILER
And things like that ?
Is that a good sign he’s back to himself just worried he’s gonna go back down hill again
He’s still on antibiotics the exact same ones still
For another week
See how he does 🤞🏽

What veggies will be good to feed in a low calcium diet and a high one?
I do bell peppers
Cucumber daily
I did carrot yesterday only a bit
Kale maybe on Friday?
Just trying to be so safe 🤞🏽
And thankyou for this

Just noticed , he’s had clear wee all yesterday
Just cleaned all bedding and there a bit of blood again😩 I search it up it says trauma whilst if he passed a stone , bleeding can come back again
I was happy as thought was better I’m back to being really stressed again, so worried ☹️
It’s a bit strange how he’s been okay and blood disappeared and now it’s back again but it’s only a bit

I hope you are ok after your surgery.

Dried dandelion is higher in calcium. The fact he has has two lots this week means you should not give him kale or anything else high calcium for another week. You can only feed one high calcium thing per week so do not give him anything else high calcium until at least next Tuesday.

The four veggies that you can safely feed every day are lettuce, cucumber, bell pepper and a little coriander. All of these provide a good mix of nutrients so it’s important to feed him a little bit of all of these four every day.
Just giving him a bit of pepper or just a bit of cucumber mean not be providing adequate nutrition each day.

I added a couple of guides to my post a few replies back - the ‘long term diet guide’ and ‘Wiebke’s guide to pees and stones’.
Please do read them as they explain everything you need to know about the general healthy diet and looking after a piggy with stones

The reality is, you won’t know if there are more stones without the scan. You will just have to watch for symptoms and signs of any pain.
The issue is that if there are any more stones they will continue to grow. Stones do not go away in their own.
In a boar due to the awkward angle they have in the urethra it is much more risky to allow them to pass them. If a stone gets stuck and blocks the flow of urine then it sadly is a life threatening emergency.

I’m concerned that you say he isn’t weeing much - keep an eye that he is still urinating regularly

Is he on any painkillers?

Are you weighing him every morning so you can monitor hay intake?

Yes he’s weeing more
I thought he wasn’t until I seen a bit patch
So he’s definitely weeing maybe I’m overthinking to much, I’ll definitely keep a eye on him see how he is just been ever so stressed and upset
Been trying my best for him as much as I can
And thankyou for that , I’ll do the veggies you’ve said and I will read and look at the things you’ve attached he’s on metacam and enrocare oral 0.22ml

And metacam is 0.12ml for another week
I’m okay now thankyou I’m recovering myself
just feel awful as being skint is the worst all my money has been spent on vet bills 😩
So I’ll see how he does by the end of week if no better I’ll have to take him back as see if vets can do me a pet plan to help pay bills
if he got to have scan I’ll do that see what they say from there … apparently there is supplements or something that can help break down a stone if guinea pigs have them

I’ll definitely see how he does if I notice anymore pain I’ll be taking him stright back
He’s not straining to wee or anything at mo.
I’m just think stones again
As he was okay yesterday but now might have another and it’s push down into bladder again

I think he did pass a stone other day as after I found it in his bed he was okay
But concerned why he has a bit of blood again
☹️

There is no medication that has been proven to successfully break down (or prevent) stones in guinea pigs.
Once a stone(s) is in there then it has to come out and in a boar that is almost always with surgery.
They might be able to pass a very very tiny one but it’s painful and, as I said, due to the angle it is a big risk and much harder for a boar to pass one than for a sow (and even that is enough of an issue)

Okay thankyou , would it be worth getting pet insurance for him? To cover the cost of surgery or no
Or would vets let you pay instalments each month for surgery

You would have to ring and speak to an insurance company but I would imagine he would not be able to be insured if there is known issue ie it could be too late to insure him for bladder surgery now if he already has diagnosed stones.

There only ever used to be one insurance company in the uk who would insure guinea pigs but I think there may be others now.
For a lot of us, our opinion has always been that insurance is not always worth it. Excesses mean you could still have to pay something towards the surgery on top of the premiums you’ve already paid and restrictions can mean they don’t pay for some medical conditions.
Many of us have just saved into a separate bank account so the money was there when needed rather than paying premiums

You would have to speak to your vet about whether they would offer a payment plan - some will, some won’t.

I’m just looking up some things for surgery just in case it says 0% finance
With the vet, I go to
It says I could do a monthly repayment
And it says they don’t ask for a upfront payment
I might just see if I can have a talk to them about it and if I can pay them back for surgery monthly it would be a lot easier for me

Hi , I think gonna take brownie for scan he’s bleeding again! , and I can do a carefreecredit with my vet
But then he just went a wee and no blood I didn’t see I’m still gonna get him sorted

Just watched him wee and now there’s no blood
In really confused

Hey seen this wee today from brownie
No blood… again , is this like healthy?
It’s just that little white patch

The white patch means he is excreting calcium. The occasional calcium pee is fine but if it happens often or feels gritty to touch then there is either:
- something wrong in the diet ( calcium intake is either too high or it’s too low);
- or in the way his body deals with calcium.

Okay thankyou
He’s been having pepper and cucumber
As he had dandelion leafs yesterday
And high in calcium
Just confused on why he had blood again today and now it’s clear , gonna take Brownie for some test and get to bottom of it

As I said the other day, he can have a more balanced veg part of his diet - just pepper and cucumber isn’t enough mix of nutrition. He can have lettuce, cucumber, bell pepper and coriander every single day to get a good balance.
Anything else is 1-2 times a week only.

It depends on what is wrong with him as to why the blood comes and goes.
Equally you need to bear in mind that sometimes urine can appear clear but can actually still contain blood ie it would show up on a test but isn’t visible to the eye
