We've just had to rush Bruno to the emergency vets. We noticed this morning that he was a little quiet but still eating and moving about as normal. Weighed him, a loss of 20g since Sunday, nothing too alarming so decided to see how he was this evening when we got home. Got home, he seemed the same, but when offered food (including his fave veggies) he wouldn't touch a thing. Back on the scaled showed a loss of another of 150g totally 170g since Monday. Straight to the vets we went.
Bruno had an examination and vets found a mass in his abdomen, so he was put under sedation to have an xray done.
Bruno has a large mass attached to his bowel that looks like it is also blocking it. The mass could be an abscess but given it's structure and position the vet is positive it is something nasty. It's about the size of a golf ball. He's extremely bloated and obvious has a blockage somewhere. Vet has thought it fair to see if we can rally him round overnight to see if he can recover enough to have further investigations to try and determine what the lump is. At the moment he is too poorly for surgery and vet doesn't think it wise to try and aspirate the lump as either way he would need surgery either way to remove it. Given it's area it's highly unlikely that surgery will be successful, especially if it is attached to the bowel, so for the moment he's been dosed up with painkillers, antibiotics and zantac to see if we can get his guts moving again. If no improvement by morning then we will sadly be taking him in to help him over rainbow bridge

My poor boy :(

I am so sorry that you are going through this right now Ruth, particularly since Bruno was a much awaited addition to your herd.
Hopefully he will rally overnight, but now he is comfortable and surrounded by love, and that is as much as any guinea pig could ever wish for.

And this will hopefully turn out to be irrelevant, but I strongly believe that sometimes an animal needs someone very special in their lives for a very short time. This is why the person has to be so special - becasue most people can't surround them with everything they need for a short but perfect time, and allow them to truly be happy.
Whatever happens with Bruno you will always know he has had this perfect time with you (and the herd).

Thank you so much, those are lovely words. I take comfort in everyone's.

Here is a picture I took of one of Bruno's x-rays. I have circled the mass as it isn't very clear in the picture, but you can see his stomach full gas too.

Thank you. Unfortunately I do think that I will be helping him over rainbow bridge tomorrow (even though I have all my fingers, toes and heart crossed that somehow he rallies around and we can keep him happy for a little longer) but either way his next 12+ hours will be full of love.

:agr: with @Swissgreys - I firmly believe that people and animals come into our lives for a reason. Bruno found his way to you Ruth, so that he could have the most wonderful love and care of your human comapany and the companionship of his own kind. He’s had this amazingly precious time with you and your herd. I hope he will have longer, but if he doesn’t then he’s had the kind of tlc that many piggies never get to receive. I’m sending you both love and hugs. He knows he’s loved xx

I’m so sorry to hear about Bruno. Sorry you’re in this position, I can only imagine how tough it is 😢 Let’s see what the next 12 hours brings. Whatever the outcome, he is loved thoroughly. All the best with the night. Hugs to Bruno from Toffee and Fudge, and to you too.

Thank you so much everyone. You are all amazing and I don't know what my piggies and I would do without all of your support. Bruno was definitely supposed to be with me and whatever happens I am privileged to have had him with me.

At least you have that time of grace - it is so much harder when you have to race them to the vets for pts or find them already dead. You can pack an eternity of love into a very small space of time; you have the right approach.

It is always heart-breaking when the time is upon you. :(

Thank you. You are right. I am happy to give him that time as long as he is pain free, which he is at the moment. When we arrived at the vet he was grimacing in waves of pain but now that has all settled since he had a pain relief injection. He's nibbled a piece of parsley but soon gave up and is currently sleeping next to me. I am syringe feeding him a little water so he's getting fluids too.

So sorry to hear about Bruno :( everything crossed for a little miracle, but if not, he couldnt have asked for a better home with you.
