Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone can suggest anything.
My 4 year old sheltie has bumble foot on 3 paws which started after a kidney stone removal and has had nearly 2 months worth of painkiller and antibiotics now following the removal but the vet told me to carry on this treatment as he was still losing a little bit of blood in his wees and because of the sudden onset of sore feet. His eating has been up and down but I've been giving him critical care 5 times a week however he is still losing weight.
The vet has advised me to give him Epsom salt baths everyday followed by sudaream. But this is not helping. I am changing his bedding everyday which are soft fleeces and addin a vitc probiotic to his critical care. I am currently waiting for gorgeous guineas f&m ointment to arrive as I'm at my wits end. I feel like he's not recovered well from his kidney stone removal although the past 4 days he hasn't lost any blood in his wees. I'm at the vets every fortnight with him seeing a rodentologist who I do rate highly.
Has anyone else had a similar problem? I really don't want him to have to have his legs amputated :( thanks x

I haven't dealt with bumblefoot before but as he losing weight you need to be syringe feeding more and more often to ensure he is getting enough going in.

A rodentologist is not the same as a cavy savvy vet so I would suggest having a look at our recommended vet list and perhaps consider seeking a second opinion

I don't have any experience of this, but have seen @Lady Kelly advice given in similar circumstances previously.

You've come to the right place for advice. Hopefully someone with the right experience will come along.I don't know where you are based but most members are in the UK where it's almost midnight, so you will probably need to wait until the morning

Thanks for letting us know your location. It might help if you added this to your profile details for us to help you in the future.

As I said I'm no expert in this area, but someone with more expertise will respond in the morning. Take care.

Sudocrem can dry the skin and lead to cracks, so I’m not sure I would use it. Also :agr: with what’s been said above. Feed critical care daily and often.

What is he bedded on?

:agr: . I wouldn’t use sudocrem either, and also ensure you see an exotic specialist vet, not rodentologist. They need to be syringe fed every 2-3 hours as well as having hay nearby so they don’t have to move far for it while they are feeling poorly. As he is still losing weight, then he isn’t eating enough, which won’t help recovery

I've dealt very successfully with an incredibly bad case of bumblefoot, using the antibiotic Zithromax in addition to the anti-inflammatory pain relief, Metacam for dogs. It wasn't a quick fix, but slowly but surely it improved. I used puppy pads for bedding, which was changed daily. I think the slow recovery from surgery needs to be investigated further too, as he should be very much better after this length of time.

Thanks for this... Is zithromax only available through my vet? Yes I'm using doggy pads now however when cleaning my piggys feet the wound is opening again, it just doesn't seem to heal. The antibiotics and painkiller seem to make his poos soft so he's stepping in them even though I'm sweeping them up every 2 hours.

Yes, Zithromax is a human antibiotic and will need to be prescribed by your vet. What pain relief are you giving and what dose?

He is on 0. 25ml of inflocam (inflacam?) once a day and sulfatrim antibiotic 0.25ml twice a day. Unfortunately as of yesterday he has blood in his wee again so I'm goin to the vets again tomorrow 😔
