hi everyone,

Well we've taken the plunge and our 2yr old male, Bumble, is getting neutered tomorrow morning - in the hope that he can form a little herd with our two girls! He's been living alone since the summer when he came to live with us after fighting with his previous cage-mate after the pair of them were put in the same cage as their females. He currently lives in a shared 3storey C&C with Buttercup and Daisy, they have a shared floor which is divided by grids so they can see, smell and 'talk pig' to each other, which they spend most of their time doing (well, he chirrups and rumbles at them while they lay down nose-to-nose with him and generally look unimpressed). I've not seen any signs of aggression between them while they've lived like this (no chattering of teeth or yawning or distress shown by any of them) so we decided to go ahead with a neuter so they can hopefully live together!

He is being checked in tomorrow morning, after his op he'll be living in what can best be described as a 'guinea pig intensive care unit' in my room! Their shared cage is in our lounge but I wanted to put him somewhere seperate so he can have peace and quiet and I can monitor him easily overnight, especially the first night. Pic belowimage.webp

It's not got his food or water or hay in it yet, but Critical Care and Avipro are on standby, the fridge and cupboard are full of his favourite veg and forage, and everything has been thoroughly cleaned down, with plenty of fresh towels and pads of keep the area as clean as possible. The radiator is on but turned down and I've got a thermometer set up to make sure he is toasty warm but not overheated.

I'm so nervous for his op! I've not looked after a post op piggie before, he is still quite a wary, nervous pig, but generally a very healthy and happy one so fingers crossed.

As you can see from the pic below (which is insisting on being sideways at the moment.......) he couldn't be less concerned!

Please wish him luck and send him healing wheeks tomorrow! And if anyone has any advice it is very gratefully received!

Good luck, Bumble. You sound well prepared. Sure one of the experts will answer some of your other queries. Hope all goes well!

Aww good luck Bumble hope all goes well and he is chsing after those girls soon! haha:) My Taz was neutered last summer so he could be with my girlies, he was unhappy on his own, but too dominant for other male piggies, so I made the descision. He is a different piggie now, so much happier and popcorns again, the girls soon sort him out though lol :) Good luck and hugsxxx this is Taz, We had fun in a photo shoot of hats a while ago..lol this is his Taz Vader look! :)DSC_2766.webp

LOVE the hat! What a sweetheart :)

I have Critical Care, Avipro and some emergency purée baby food to get stuff into his system if he isn't keen on eating when he comes home x

Nice to hear the op went well! Hope Bumble recovers nicely and soon!

So glad to hear the op has gone well, I bet you can't wait to get him home, poor little mite will be feeling sorry for himself for a while!

This is great news! Lots of recovery vibes to Bumble x

He's home :) he's a bit subdued and feeling a bit sorry for himself and has hopped straight into bed, but is picking at his food which has been served right to the door of his bed house lol :) he's a bit snuffly and whimpery but he was happy for me to hold him and even bubbled a bit :) he has glued incisions rather than stitches and has had a clean shave down below bless him! He ate as soon as he woke up and has thoroughly charmed all the vets nurses!

Here he is, before food was added :)

Thanks for all your supportive messages :) I'm letting him have a well deserved nap but once my 5yr old is in bed I'm going to sit with him for the evening, keep tabs on his food intake and watch a movie :) x

I'm glad everything went well. I am sure Mr Cutie Bumble the piggie will be glad soon when he gets to see his female friends!

Hope he's doing ok today. I'm thinking of having one of my 6 month old boys neutered as he has starting really biting us! He's really not a fan of being held by us and bullies his smaller brother! How is Bumble coping with his glued stitches? He's a wee cutie by the way x

He's doing really well with his glued stitches, although he did get a nasty shock when he tipped out his hay and walked over it!

I feel your pain, my Daisy is a biter, although I have heard that neutering guinea pigs doesn't affect their temperament like it can with cats and dogs unfortunately - correct me if I'm wrong more experienced owners :)

X

For what I read, you're right @Joeykins, neutering guinea pigs doesn't change their behaviour, that's why usually people don't recommend to neuter them unless you're going to mix them with sows (or because of some kind of health problem, of course), because its an operation afterall and it has its risks.

I'm glad he's doing fine

Aw thanks for asking, he's doing really well - touch wood! He's actually gained 10grams since Monday lol! He's healing well, only a tiny red speck on one of his incisions but no inflammation or discharge or anything and he's content and happy and eating/pooping well. He has has post op check on Sunday and if the vet thinks he's ready he'll be moving back into his old home and the countdown begins till he can intergrate with the girls :D
