I have been using burgess excel pellets since September and I have a 4kg bag that I would like to use before considering changing but Science selective is sending a sample to me I was wondering which do you prefer/recommend?

Well, mine have stopped eating their Science Selective !

It is at this stage that I have to apologise to Helen on behalf of my guinea pigs ! @helen105281 is our expert on pellets and has advised on the best pellets to give guinea pigs - mine don't eat any of them.

Mine have started eating Burgess now !

It's as much your piggies choice as yours... Mine won't touch anything apart from Science Selective despite attempts to try various things for various reasons....

Samples are a good way forward to test the water...

They're usually not picky eaters, but I was wondering which is better for nutrition?

i give an equal mix of selective and burgess in the same pellet bowl,so that my cavies do not get to fixated on one type of pellet.samles are a great idea to try before you buy .

Do you think mixing is a better idea than sticking to one brand? I am concerned about putting my trust in only one brand.

I have a mix of pets at home own brand, selective and excel.
Mine won't touch excel but love selective!
Maisy's previous owners gave herpets at home own brand, Poppy's previous owners gave her Guinea pig muesli.

I use both burgess and science selective in the same bowl also. I think they do prefer the selective ones as they are normally the first to be gobbled

They seem to love the excel,I'll see what they prefer excel or selective. Which do you Think is the better brand for nutrition?

I think burgess is slightly lower in calcium which is better for my boys but to be honest I'm no expert so I'm not sure about the nutritional value. I would be interested to know the answer though

This will be interesting, I had someone buy me muesli but they are far too selective, so purchased SS and they eat that right up but wondered if there was a better one out there.....i guess i should be grabbing some testers (hmmm sounds like i'm going on a robbing spree lol).

They are pretty similar to each other really though Burgess excel is slightly higher in both protein and calcium. Both have pretty standard ingredients for commercial pellets like alfalfa, soya and grains. The Excel also has mollasses. I try my best to feed grainless pellets with more natural ingredients so to be honest I struggle to recommend one of these over the other. I suppose it depends on what your pigs prefer. I do feed Burgess occasionally if I have a pig that can't have the grainless for any reason but try my best to keep them grainless where I can.

Do you think I should feed a mix of both if the pigs like the science selective? Their main diet is hay so I'm not too worried about pellets, but would like to know they're getting a good diet.

If your guinea pigs eat Science Selective and you can buy it easily , there's no harm in sticking to the one brand . The only advantage of mixing brands is that you have a "fall back" if you can't get one brand - or if your guinea pigs go off one brand.

If they are eating plenty of hay and some Vit C rich veggies , there's no worry at all. i have heard of some forum members who don't feed pellets at all.

You could for a bit of variety but if they are happily eating one then you could just stick with that. I would not have said one is nutritionally better than the other. Maybe try adding in new types of hay instead .

I have been using the burgess excel brand of hay,I mix all 4 types in a big box the chamomile herbage, birch bark herbage, dried forage and marigold and dandelion herbage.. I'll try a new brand too,the burgess excel hay is quite expensive.

Mine don't like the burgess hay ! - They're so fickle !

Mine seem to love it,I bought hay which they didn't like and it put them off their hay,on the brand I always use so I decided to try this hay and they eat lots now! Can you suggest a good supplier of timothy hay? It's also for a rabbit and he went off that hay too so it can't be a great hay.

Are you near a branch of Pets at Home ? - the Alfalfa King Timothy hay is good - but expensive.

Pets at home is an hour's drive away so I can't get in very often. I'll look for it the next time I'm in. I was hoping to buy in bulk though.

They are tiny packets too. Have a look on the Hay Experts as there are loads to choose from. Oxbow is nice as a treat. Alfalfa king Timothy hay is too.

The burgess excel are also tiny packets the 500g is around €3.50(I'm in Ireland) and the 1kg is €6.

I feed Burgess mint pellets but have just bought science selective to see if they like it. I put a handful in earlier and they gobbled it up so I think they do!

I plan to feed a mix of the 2 for a bit of variety. Mine do eat the pellets but only go through about a handful a day (so they aren't eating the 'recommended' amount)

Mine love the Burgess hay! When I first got my girls they wouldn't touch the standard pets at home meadow hay I bought but they went nuts for the Burgess brand. I have the one with dandelion in. I think their choices may be because it's the same name as my surname

I fed my little ones wagg for a long time then have tried the burgess excel which they just didn't really eat also tried the science selective, but they don't seem to be big fans of either so it looks like I am going back to wagg, I guess it's just more natural for them instead of compacted pellets.
I'm thinking if someone gave me a meal in a pellet form or all the actually ingredients I know what I would go for( astronaut food).

I give them the variety with their vegetables to prevent boredom.

My sample of science selective arrived today the rabbit and guinea pigs love it! I am thinking about giving them burgess and science selective to add a bit of variety to their diet.
