I had saw an old thread that was closed for discussion, and wanted to reply for others who needed it. The thread was about carpet in guinea pig cages instead of bedding or fleece. I personally love using carpet tiles in my girls cages. I bought the carpet tiles form dollar tree. There thick, absorbent, and two fit perfectly in their cages. There the flatter type of carpet, so ther toes don’t get stuck in the threads. There’s no odor either. I used to have fleece in there cages, and occasionally I will still uses fleece when it’s cold, but I had a lot of trouble with the fleec and how dirty it was getting. I found the hay to stick to it like glue. No matter what I did, and how many times I cleaned there cage, the hay would always stick and leave a big mess. I would shake off as much as I could outside, but there would still be some hay stuck to it, which eventually lead to my washing machine getting really tore up. With the carpet tiles nothing gets stuck to them, and I can easily sweep stuff right up. For washing I bring them outside, and spray them off with the water hose, then let them air dry. If they need a deep washing I’ll used dawn dish soap with the water and again let it dry. My guinea pigs are pretty much litter box trained, so there’s not a big concern with the pee getting in the carpet either. I also think my pigs prefer the carpet, it’s easier for them to distinct between old and new food as like I’ve said before the food would get stuck to the fleece, and my piggies not knowing what was old and new wouldn’t eat as much. On top of everything the carpet is nice and flat, which offers a nice stable ground for my pigs to run around. The fleece on the other hand was lumpy and they kinda just sunk into it when running. I do put pieces of fleece in there cage if needed for warmth as well. I recommend carpet tiles for anyone with problems with messy piggies, and piggies who are having trouble running on top of the fleece I also recommend them for pigs who look like they may be hot. Without the extra fabric the carpet will cool them right down.
