Casran Very Ill - Best Wishes Please

A diuretic clears fluid from the chest. The most common is Frusemide.

Poor Casran! I can send a wee video for some tips on giving his meds? Fudge gets 3 different medications via syringe every 8 hours so she would be a great one to show you the tricks- 7 months later and she still trys to pull them!

Would second the use of a probiotic- its basically to replace the good bacteria in his guts that the antibiotics will kill off.. Its like us taking a probiotic yoghurt drink such as yakult. Avipro plus, fibreplex pr pro-c are most common ones used. It should be given 1-2 hours after his antibiotics, can be given on some veg x

Okay so heres a wee video of different ways iv found effective to give meds. I used just water as fudge wasnt due her meds.. But she took this too easily and wasnt very realistic of how it usually goes down so i added more of her taking it after the syringe had been dipped in a medicine she doesnt like! Hope it helps x

Ps excuse the state of me.. Its a saturday afternoon afterall!

ABSOLUTE HYSTERICS getting the last 0.2ml into him tonight. Tried every trick suggested in this thread.

Deep breath. Try again tomorrow.

He's had a good dose today tho x

It often gets easier as you have more practise and quite often they being to accept that it's going to happen no matter how much they protest, and eventually resign themselves to it more. Not always, but it does happen, so fingers crossed that your wriggle-lion-pig will do the same.
At least he's had a dose :) x

He's quite freakishly strong!

He is breathing a little easier tonight I think ... maybe.

X

Yeah, you'd think such a little fluff-ball couldn't butt us out of the way or remove themselves from the syringe when we have them in a head-lock, but they have the knack...... and the strength!

Sorry i couldnt help! Sitting him in a box in the bathroom whilst the shower runs will help clear his airways too x

Oh no! You're an amazing help! I think it still just takes practice tho!

Casran is 1.2kg of pure muscle power too ... he's much stronger than me! Ha

Will keep using your top tips until I get it right x

She sends her love x

Aww his doppelganger, of course! X

Don't tell Casran's wife! Teehee x

Hello gorgeous Crunchie x

How is little Casran doing? Are you managing meds a bit better?

He's quite poorly ... very snotty and struggling to breath.

But he wants to run around and play which I'm thinking is a bad idea!

Med situation very bad ... no matter which technique I tried :-(

Oh no :( poor little guy!

Forcing meds can seem quite distressing for us as he are afraid he are hurting them but we truly aren't. 0.8ml once a day is a lot, you could try splitting dose and give it twice a day so it's easier?

I put mine on my lap and sort of use my body and left arm to form a barrier and keep them still (if that makes sense), preventing piggie from backing. I hold their head with my left hand quite firmly (you won't hurt him) and with right hand insert syringe in month until they start a chewing movement. I then dispense it. Their back teeth are quite far back so you can go quite in, you won't hurt him. Syringe needs to go far back otherwise he will spit the stuff.

Hold him firmly, he will sense if you unsure and struggle. I know it's easier said that done but keep trying, you are doing great.

What veg does he like?

Thanks for your advice @MrsSuzy I just can't hold his head still. He's rather strong.

This morning I got a bit into him then after much stressful fighting resorted to slicing a grape in half, scoring it, then soaking the antibiotics into the two halves and he ate them.

X

That's not bad then, as long as he does eat it instead of spitting it it's ok. It means the meds are in him. The worry with giving it on food is that sometimes they refuse the food or spit it because Baytril tastes quite bitter. Did you give the full dose?

He really needs another 0.2ml.

I'll get it into him somehow.

He's so snotty today, poor thing. He sounds like a baby with a cold.

Don't worry if you didn't get the full dose in one go. I would definitely spilt it half and half and give morning and evening. It'll be easier for you and for him and it will still do its job.

@TheAurora is your vets open? It may be worth getting some biosolvin to break down that mucous and help him breathe. Is he on metacam/loxicom? That might also help as it will reduce inflammation. If u can set up a wee tent for him with a bowl of boiling water and a few drops of albas in it- give him a wee steaming session. My mallow has very narrowed nasal passages and sometimes get bacterial infections that make her congested and the albas steaming sessions really help. You are doing your best, just keep at it x

Hi Adelle

I've been laying him next to a bowl of hot water with olbas oil in it and even holding him over it for a few breaths every now and again - not steaming water that could hurt him of course.

Hmmmm just thinking of how to make a tent...

Biosolvin... okay. Thanks.

His breathing is so laboured, to be totally honest I don't know if he's going to get through this!

Sh*t :-( i'd give your vets a call hun, they may want to reevaluate him. I know its early days but if his breathing is particularly laboured they may want to add in another antibiotic or even check his chest for fluid. Hows his weight today.. That will give u an idea if hes eating as much as usual. Cmon Casran!

Keep up the good work The Aurora.

I really feel for you - it's horrible having an ill Piggy.

I appriciate you don't want to give you exact location on an open forum - but, I wondered if there was anyone ( a rescue or something) locally who could help you give medication.

I will openly admit that I have stuggled to give medication and have resorted to getting help from other people . There's some wonderful people around .

I can second that. My first piggy Mikey had ringworm then a URI.. I had to wrap him up tight in a towel before i could get a syringe anywhere near his face- but the vet managed fine and i was mortified. It just takes practice, for both you and Casran.
