Hi all,

I have a 4 year old neutered male guinea pig who very unfortunately has a bladder stone. After long discussions and thoughts we decided not to opt for the stress and uncertainty of surgery, but to medicate and keep a close eye, intervening when we need to.
You'll all know how heartbreaking it is to have an unwell animal. One of the factors in not having surgery is admittedly vet bills (it has been estimated around £700 for the surgery plus pre-op costs and already paid £200 for x-rays). I don't begrudge him any of it, but I wish I had the funds to not even think about it.

I work freelance so cannot go through charities like Blue Cross for financial help, but was wondering if you know of any independent funds which help in emergency surgeries? Before my boy gets any worse I just want to know I've explored every avenue. If there was any pot hidden away for such situations, I would definitely take the surgery risks to save him.

Just want to add that I'm not begging you for money, and I am very aware of the need to have spare funds for such occurrences, but in this day and age I can plan and plan but only do so much! Any advice on places which may help fund my boy would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not aware of anything specifically for pets. However I am aware of turn2us. It's a website that you can search for grants on as there are many industry and small charities. You may be able to apply to one based on current work, work history, any specific illness or sometimes just down to having the right surname. It's always worth using their grants search to check what is available.

There is also the option of insurance for future pets through exotic direct. Obviously this doesn't help with your current situation as they won't cover pre existing medical conditions.
