Hi all,
It's been a while I know and I am sorry to come back to the forum like this.

Our Chicco is not doing great. He is not moving properly. Looks like he can't stand on his feet. We rushed him to the vet but there was no exotic available. I am bringing him back tomorrow morning at 9.30am but I am afraid h3 won't make it.

He is frinking eating a pooping. He has n temperature, clear nose and lunges.

We don't know what's wrong or what to do to help.

Any idead? :(

Hi!

I am very sorry!

Please keep him as comfortable as you can. All I can do is guess as much as you because your description is simply too vague. It could be a mild stroke or something neurological, but only a vet examination can help you further. these things can unfortunately happen at any time of life out of the blue.

Here are our detailed tips for what you can do and what you need to look out for the time being: Emergency, Crisis and Bridging Care until a Vet Appointment

Fingers very firmly crossed fo Chicco!

Hi Wiebke,
Thank you so much for this.
As usual you are always helpful and kind.

We are keeping a very close eye on him and try to see any other sign of distress.
He seems sleepy now, which I think is normal.
My hope is that he'll make it to the vet tomorrow morning. (they should have exotic vets on call for emergency too :( the vet we saw tonight could not find anything wrong).

I'll keep u all posted.

Hello everyone,
We are back from the vet.

Chicco keeps having up and downs.
So far we only know that he has a running nose, so the vet started antibiotics and he lost somr weight. According to the vet the things could be linked or something internal is causing him distress therefore lost of weight therefore nose running and so on.

We also started critical care and pain killers.

We will bring him back on Saturday for blood test and x ray. I am so worried for the anesthesia :(

He has obviously something that is impeding mobility/weakening his legs, either internally or along the spine to cause him to hop instead of walking.

Has your vet checked for internal growths, bladder/kidney stones/issues, infection in his boar bits etc.?
Looking after guinea pigs with limited or no mobility

There is nothing springing to my mind that connects the two symptoms you are citing.

Hello there,

Sorry your chap is poorly. He looks sore like he is reluctant to move due to pain or potentially generalised weakness. Which vet are you seeing. Manor vets are great and up your way should you need an exotic vet. Is he eating at all?
Sadly piggies are very much medical mysteries to many a vet including specialists so don't feel bad that they don't quite know what's happening. Hopefully the X-rays and bloods will at least shed some light on what is happening.
Sorry I cannot be of much more help. Supporting him as best you can is the most important thing now. Ensuring he is syringe fed if not eating well and given his pain killers and antibiotics.

x

No experience of this bunny hopping but hope it’s nothing serious just a pulled muscle or something which will go away of its own accord very soon x

Hi, Martina's husband and Chicco's pigdad here.
The feeling is that he gets very weak or in pain, and therefore, like you said, gives up moving. But there have been moments when he moved just fine (like when he jumps on the pillow in the video), I am not an expert but I guess that could at least rule out a few things. He has been eating quite eagerly honestly, given his general state. He eats, drinks and poops fine. But he really looks in pain. I hope the painkiller and antibiotics can at least give him some temporary relief. He's being seen by an exotic at Manor Vets. It's heartbreaking to see him like this, up until yesterday at this time he was a proper adventurer, curious, friendly and very active as he's always been.

If he is adventurous do you think it may be something physical, he might have fallen or jumped a bit too high and strained himself, he looks really healthy apart from the strange movement. It’s very strange especially if he is eating, drinking and pooping fine. Its as if he moves then sits down as if he is tried or in pain, have you checked his feet for anything? Just a thought x

The thing is he was fine and one moment later he was like this (this was yesterday) and this is quite hard to process. You'd think is something physical that happened suddenly, but the vet had him checked very throughly and could not find anything external. He's eating as I write and he's a bit responsive, so at least that's good.

Thank you guys. We really appreciate your support. I just finish feeding critical care to Chicco. He feels so tiny and fragile. He deserves so much better. Hopefully the painkillers will start working soon.

Hello again.

Just gave Chicco antibiotics and painkillers.
I had to pick him up and he felt like a boneless doll. I put him back in the cage and he seems awake but I absolutely don't like this :(

Bless you, I'm holding you in my thoughts.Feed often and around the clock, every two hours if you can x

Chicco almost can't move at all now. He's laying down in his cage, we put a towel on him, in case he's cold, and dimmed the lights, trying not to stress him. You can tell that he wants to move but he's not able to. I feel like there's nothing we can do now.

So sorry. If you are concerned then I would suggest calling your vets out of hours service to see if they can help or having him in at the hospital.

x

It's a bit hard to think straight now, but it feels like he's leaving us.
We did bring him in for an emergency visit last night, then he had another visit with a different vet this morning...I don't know if seeing a vet now would be of any help? I want to do all that is possible, but I'd also want him to go as peacefully as he can, if it's his time. I really don't know whar would be the best for him now :(

Please contact the out-of-hours vets for advice. You can find them by googling or by listening to the message on your regular vet's phone line.

Morning all.
Chicco is still fighting.

I can see he wants to eat but he is having trouble with the critical care too. It's almost like any kind of movement is becoming an impossible task.

I will call Manor Vets as soon as they open, with the out of hour vet they never know ehat to say.

I am getting concerned for hay intake since he is not getting it for himself. Is the critical care going to be enough? I am using the oxbow brand.

Thank in advance.

Martina
