Concern for a Facebook group

It's sad to read. I mean, they have the resources and know animal needs medical treatment, but it's not a dog so not worth it? I didn't realise vets won't treat pigs. I mean, you can find a vet who knows enough to treat a haypoke but you wouldn't trust him/her to do bladder surgery on your pig (and they refer you to exotic specialist). I actually thought vets wouldn't skip the chance to take in a patient and get paid for doing so.
To be honest you get a lot of oblivious people in the UK and lockdown was proof of how much the sales of animals gone up because parents wanted kids to have something to occupy them, or adults didn't think what will happen once everyone is back at work... Furlough isn't forever, but dog is...
My local vet is fab - she is brilliant with the basics like hay pokes, abscesses and fungal, and because it is a small practice she always gives me an appointment when no other animals are around so I can walk straight in and there is no stress for the piggies.
But she also openly admits her limitations and if in doubt she calls a more experienced colleague or just tells me to take the piggies to the specialist in the first place.
She really is fantastic.

While some vets have less knowledge than others a lot of the problems around people being given bad advise is down to the fact they haven't listened to the vet in the first place and just hear what they want. I used to work at vets so have witnessed this first hand. A locum vet told me one time that after explaining to a man what was wrong with his pet the man rang his wife while still in the consulting room and told her the vet had said something completely difgerent. It's like some people filter out the word "not" from a sentence like "swimming is not good for your guinea pig"
I know someone like that. They're dog (spaniel) has no waist, no ribs literally a barrel on legs. Apparently the vet said that it's the perfect weight and could actually gain weight! As well as hand gel is ok to put in ears and on feet to stop the dog itching (dog has a fungal issue probably from allergies, exactly the same as what my beau suffered). I've tried saying to them that it may be worth the vet having a little look just to be on the safe side. They came back from the vets and said that it was fine and that, get this and I quote, 'male dogs should have a litter before being neutered' I don't speak to them anymore

That is so sad. Obviously when having things explained to you by a vet it can be difficult to take it all on-board especially when emotions are high and genuine misunderstandings can happen. But I think there are also people who go with it already fixed in their minds what they will be told and come away believing that is what happened regardless.

@Pound Shilling & Pig I even went to the vet and asked if, for example, hand gel in ears or on feet was something that you can use on dogs to stop itching knowing full well what the answer would be (for anyone wondering, they did say 'no'). As well as males having a litter. When the vet asked why (believe it or not I'm quite an intelligent being so these stupid questions probably shocked her), I said what this person had said... They said male dogs DON'T need a litter and that the dog is obese. The other things hadn't even been brought up!

Yes emotions and what not get in the way. When Beau was diagnosed with a brain tumor, my brain turned to mush. I asked a lot of questions and if I didn't understand, I told them. Which I think some people don't do. They don't ask the questions nor do they ask them to repeat or explain what they mean. No enough people do that even with more mundane things and walk away confused.

I made every mistake in the book when I first got my boys. They were petshop piggies, I held them on their backs, gave them bath time, small pet shop cage, poor diet, small hay rack but the advice I got from my vet during a routine check up only backed up that I was doing the right thing and he claimed to have piggies himself. It's hard when 90% say "it's great" "my pigs love it" and "I've been doing that for 50 years" and 10% say "maybe that's not a good idea" it takes a while to get used to filtering the good information from the bad and not just going with the popular opinion.

After about a year of pig ownership most of my mistakes were fixed and I'm pretty sure I'm making up for it now spoiling them like crazy. The pampered piggies are 2.5 years old now and have completely forgiven me but it's hard to forgive myself.

Part of being an owner is evolving. Learning from your mistakes and changing it for the better. No one knows everything and knowledge is always changing, being able to change with it is what's important ☺️ I think everyone has fallen into newbie traps when they first get a pet, more so rodents I find. We're all guilty. But we have learnt from books, internet, videos and each other and I think that's what is important as we all just want what's best for what ever animal in our care. :)

Myself and another member have just been told off for replying to a sexing post and advising a vet check if the OP wasn’t sure as we’re not admins and it’s apparently against the group rules to comment on a sexing post if you’re not admin 🤔 I would never comment on a sexing post if I wasn’t sure of the sex

I wouldn't either. I got told off too. I didn't even say boy/girl I showed them a diagram of what to look for and linked the sexing guide off here. Other than the usual wait until they're 2 weeks old as it's easier if they're babies.

Tbh I put a few photos up on there when Apollo and Dysnomia were born. Try to get as many opinions as possible really. One said 2 boys the other said potential girl and a definite boy (they were 1 1/2 weeks though but they were big babies). So glad I kept going over that guide and comparing to the older 2 or I could have potentially had another pregnant pig.

My comments keep getting removed on the 'i only own 1 pig' posts. I linked stuff which backs up why 2 is better than 1. People kept saying 'well mines fine by himself', 'mine have play dates but like their own space' or a new one 'my guinea pig killed his cage mate". Like seriously if that happened, that's surely the humans fault. They don't go about perfectly happy then kill, they give signs that they're not happy.

My comments kept getting deleted by admins because they're 'irrelavent'

You’re not allowed to voice your opinions on that group it would seem unless your admin :(

There’s only so many times you can tell someone something. If they don’t listen 🤷🏾‍♀️

Yeh one was also saying 100mg of vitamin c is best and this leading exotic expert said so. I found their website and linked it...it says 25mg for adults...yeh they didn't like that

Seems they don't like anyone who calls them out on their craziness. Sensible truths will get you banned! It's so ridiculous it's laughable.

I'm pretty new to Guinea Pigs and this website. I will say that we have two happy contented boys due in part to the advice on this website. Unlike Facebook there is no agenda in relation people contributing to this site, just a love for Guinea Pigs.
The key word there is agenda. They want to be praised on how knowledgeable they are and how fab they must be. How can that be when they’re giving incorrect information and reinforcing misconceptions?!

I logged onto Facebook this week so the husband could change some privacy settings. But otherwise I haven’t been on since last year sometime. The idea of all those posts fills me with dread! 🙄
