So last night, Bertie, my 3 year old guinea keeled over about mid afternoon, we were almost certain he was dead as my young (about 7 months old) guinea was just stood on top of him and Bertie wasn't even moving - and Bertie is clearly the dominant male.

Anyway, we separated the other two and left Bertie in the run, tucked up in a box of hay with water and food etc. I checked on him about 5pm, and his fur was puffed out, his eyes were sunken and dull and he was just in the little hut all curled up. We put the other two back in an attempt to perk him up, but this didn't happen.

I got him out without him even flinching, and wrapped him up in a towel, and cuddled him. He kept shaking and sneezing and just looked very sad. We decided to keep him separate from the other guineas and gave him is own space. Wrapped him up in two layers of towels, and out him in the little hut which was filled with paper, we opened the towels up so he could move and filled the box with hay, and we honestly thought he wouldn't make it through the night.

This morning when we went to see him, he was all bright eyed and was reluctant to be picked up (as most guineas are) so I hand fed him some bamboo, and he ate that and we put him back into the hutch with the others, who seemed pleased to see him.

Does anyone have any idea what happened to him? Do you think he was just cold? I thought that he perhaps had an URI so that's why we separated him. But this morning he is back to his usual self, but he is limping a little, but didn't squeak or jump when I touched all of his legs/arms/feet this morning, so I'm a bit confused. Can anyone help?

(Sorry for the long post and also apparently he keeled over earlier in the week when I was out but then was fine)

Firstly, please take him to a vet, sounds like it could in fact be a URI and without treatment this can be fatal.
Also, I'm not sure about the keeling over but he doesn't sound right at all.
Your best bet would be a 'cavvy savvy' vet, if you add your location then others may be able to direct you or use the vet locator at the top of the page.
Hope he gets well soon!

Please have Bertie seen by a vet as soon as you can! he could have had a stroke or he can have an illness.

It would help us a lot if you please added which country your personal Disneyland is in, as we deal with people from all over the world and in widely differing conditions.

Sorry to hear Bertie is poorly a definite vets visit needed as soon as possible.

He definitely sounds as though he needs to see a vet for further assessments. It could be anything from a URI to serial strokes or seizures or something else entirely. I had a pet mouse who used to have spells like that, and although it's quite hard to do an assessment on a mouse, the vet's beliefs was that she was having seizures. Hope you get some answers!

Any news on what the vet said? poor little chap hope he's ok

Thanks everyone, absolutely no idea from the vet. Perhaps too much sugar in the parsnip that he ate or was just having a bit of trouble digesting. Not sure. Since we took him out for the night, Neville decided to be alpha male, which ended up in Neville and Bertie having a massive fight, and £123 later, Neville is now all stitched up. I did warn Neville not to pick on the big guy!

Going to have to separate the guineas up now. :(

Poor Neville bless him, they never really paid much attention to him either, he was only trying to make friends! He seems to get on fine with boris and Norman, but not Bertie.. Thinking of giving boris and Bertie to a friend for her two little girls to look after, at least then I'll still be able to hear about them!
