So last night, Bertie, my 3 year old guinea keeled over about mid afternoon, we were almost certain he was dead as my young (about 7 months old) guinea was just stood on top of him and Bertie wasn't even moving - and Bertie is clearly the dominant male.
Anyway, we separated the other two and left Bertie in the run, tucked up in a box of hay with water and food etc. I checked on him about 5pm, and his fur was puffed out, his eyes were sunken and dull and he was just in the little hut all curled up. We put the other two back in an attempt to perk him up, but this didn't happen.
I got him out without him even flinching, and wrapped him up in a towel, and cuddled him. He kept shaking and sneezing and just looked very sad. We decided to keep him separate from the other guineas and gave him is own space. Wrapped him up in two layers of towels, and out him in the little hut which was filled with paper, we opened the towels up so he could move and filled the box with hay, and we honestly thought he wouldn't make it through the night.
This morning when we went to see him, he was all bright eyed and was reluctant to be picked up (as most guineas are) so I hand fed him some bamboo, and he ate that and we put him back into the hutch with the others, who seemed pleased to see him.
Does anyone have any idea what happened to him? Do you think he was just cold? I thought that he perhaps had an URI so that's why we separated him. But this morning he is back to his usual self, but he is limping a little, but didn't squeak or jump when I touched all of his legs/arms/feet this morning, so I'm a bit confused. Can anyone help?
(Sorry for the long post and also apparently he keeled over earlier in the week when I was out but then was fine)
