Junior Guinea Pig
You've all heard the line "never teach your grandmother to suck eggs", right? (Always thought that a particularly disgusting image but, I digress). Well, I have been *attempting* to teach my guinea pig to eat Corn-on-the-Cob! I made some beautiful Corn Cobs yesterday. Boiled them for over an hour until they were plump, juicy & delicious. However, when I set one of them, properly cooled, in Freddie's bowl he just looked at it, sniffed, and ignored it! Oooh, I was peeved ... but then I thought: 'hang on; perhaps this wee chap has never been given corn this way before, and doesn't understand what to do with it'. So, I plucked a few pieces off and hand-fed them to him: "this is your dinner, Freddie", I encouraged, smiling at him. He took them from me, gave an indifferent "oh well just to please you" kinda munch, and then spat the kernals out! Grrrr. "Frederick", I said sternly, "this is your dinner. It's lovely. I prepared it especially for you. This is how you eat it!" I then got another Corn Cob and sat gnawing on it in front of him (how I know they were delicious, btw!). Oh what a picture ... me, eating corn, messily, from my hands, dripping juice, and Freddie, lazily watching me, but eating hay! Streuth! I left his Corn in his bowl, with my cleaned husk beside it by way of example, and retired in defeat. Ahh, 'fun & frolics with Freddie' - I could write a book!
Questions: do guinea pigs not like corn? What did I do wrong?
its all part of the fun!
