COVID-19 Coronavirus

Possibly until June everywhere is saying, but that's just an estimate. I'm not believing anything until it comes out of boris or one of his colleagues mouths officially on TV.

Ok, If you hear any updates could you please let me know? I don’t trust anything my mother says as she hears 3 words of something and makes her own story

Northampton police has put on their website that they are getting a high volume of calls, reporting people breaking the lockdown rules, and then the police have gone on to write, if you think we will be turning up with blue lights and a siren on, you're wrong. We want to educate people first. So obviously the governemt lockdown rules watched by millions, was not enough to get through to some people.

There will always be people who think the rules don't apply to them, because they feel invulnerable. In Belgium, there were lockdown parties the night before the first set of measures came into effect (mostly young people who probably tought they couldn't get infected).

Around here (and maybe that's the way it'll go in the UK as well), the first ten days or so were mostly about educating people to the new rules, and giving fines to the most blatant violations of the lockdown rules (parties, restaurants who wouldn't close, groups of more than 5 or 6 people, that kind of thing).

Now they've moved to higher fines, that you have to pay on the spot, and they're less tolerant of excuses as by this point, everyone should be aware of what they can and can't do.

Here's to hoping we'll soon be over this crisis.

Is it true that the uk is going into a 3-6 month lockdown or is my mother just scaremongering?

I caught the end of BBC news before bed. It was a recap of the Government daily update with a woman on (can't remember her name) but she did say something about three week reviews for around six months or something until we are back to some form of normality.

I have a feeling it will be September before things start picking up (schools etc open again). The 12 week period now for vulnerable is to protect them further & I can't imagine it will be safe enough in June for every one/thing to get back to normal. Restrictions would have to be lifted slowly & monitored to see affects of this.

Sadly I think lots of people think the current three week lockdown is going to solve all & really it's not even going to scratch the surface.

We will never forget the year 2020 will we!

Thank you for the summary. I’m in the US for another two months and was hoping for my fiancé to come back with me, and then for us to return to the US shortly after (we filed for a fiancé visa and planned to get married) I’m hoping we can do this somehow, I must sound selfish :(

@Rivervixen not selfish at all. It's hard when you plan for something and then something like this happens. We are all feeling it.

I just hate not knowing where I am with things as well, my anxiety makes it so I’m always trying to solve things as soon as they arise and there’s nothing I can do for myself or anybody right now. I hate how helpless I feel. Thank you for the support

My anxiety has been through the roof for weeks now, so I know what you mean. My plan for this year is now out the window but I can still do what I planned, just later in the year (still not sure how I feel about starting to learning to drive in winter... I was hoping to get started in the better weather!) hey ho.

I’m also learning to drive :) I hope the weather holds out for you, sorry that you’re feeling anxious as well, it’s a horrible feeling especially when we can’t do anything about it

Since the press have just decided to go ham with the 6 months statement, I highly suggest anyone who didn't see the press conference with Jenny Harries, the deputy chief medical officer, watches it IN FULL, and doesn't just take the word of several news outlets who are not helping the situation:

Essentially, think of lockdown as a tap. You turn the tap on and infections flow on and rise, and you turn it off for a while when the infections get too high in the bucket of the country. I would anticipate this first lock down to last a good month, they'll review it at the end of 3 weeks, which would mean somewhere around 14th/15th Aprilish and see where the case numbers sit. If they remain too high, the tap will remain off and lockdown will stay in place a little longer. If the numbers are steady or lowered, the tap goes on and probably strict house lockdown is relaxed for a while. That doesn't mean normality however, but certainly I would expect people to be allowed to go out a bit more, even if large group gatherings are still out and not many shops would be open.

Six months total, with the tap on, tap off approach, would be about right to contain a pandemic of this scale according to all the models done by Imperial College and they seem to be the thing most constantly used by the government for the measures here.

As a source of good news, Imperial has also recently said they're seeing "early signs" that the spread has begun to slow thanks to the lockdown. I can't find the quote to source it because my bookmarks are a mess of food suppliers, but it was a nice thing to read nonetheless!

I've been watching some of donald trumps speeches about the coronavirus, and he really is very very very bad, it's almost unbelievable. He doesn't even really look at the people, he just stares at a piece of paper, and then just keeps saying we have it all under control and its a Chinese virus. That's all he sais.

Every time he opens his mouth, he was making bazillions of mistakes so people told him to read from a paper in front of him. Ever since he started to read from a paper in front of him, he started to make more sense, thanks to the pre-written notes.

I don't think he is living on this planet!

Our TV is on news most of the time, Sky News, BBC, CNN. And now whenever Trump is on TV, I don't listen to what he says. I only listen when the expert doctors are the ones speaking. He doesn't have the ability to grasp how enormous the situation is. His only concern is the economy and of course his business. Guess what? The whole world's economy has gone bust. What we can do is just lower down the number of deaths that is happening.

This situation is causing so many people a lot of anxiety and it’s heaven for the conspiracy theorists as well as the sensationalists .
So... the best way to deal with this is to make fun of them
Get your thinking caps on and I will start a Wild Conspiracy Thread.
See who can come up with the craziest conspiracy theory.

Trump is only interested in making himself sound brilliant and special. He has no self awareness and has no concept of how he ACTUALLY comes across.

I understand that the "wet markets" where this virus transmitted to humans from animals and started all this nightmare, have opened again in China. These must be banned for the sake of the animals as well as the humans on this planet:hb::no:

Nope.

Not only would banning wet markets not completely eradicate the chances of something like this happening again, but it would drive such sellers underground. So when it next happens, because it will, where do you look? The people involved aren't going to readily admit to doing something illegal, making it much harder to find the source of whatever virus it is next time.

Plus, wet markets aren't the problem. Wet markets are common everywhere, including here in Europe. They involve selling perishable goods, which includes meats, fish, fruit and vegetables...you get the idea. Wiki explains it much better than I could, so Wet market - Wikipedia

Knee jerk reactions like banning wet markets aren't going to help anyone in the long term.

Its probably just blame, it probably didn't even come from there. Who knows, no one ever will. That's not me starting a conspiracy b t W

The wet markets in China are dangerous because of the animals they keep in such close proximity. So many species wouldn't be on top of each other in the wild. Not to mention the welfare is horrendous and stressed animals in terrible conditions won't be healthy....

Technically wet markets are everywhere, it's just the live wild animal markets that have caused this (and several other major diseases that could have easily led us to this). They keep varied species of wild animal in close proximity, these animals are in close proximity with humans, the hygiene and sanitation are terrible. Many of those species are imported from other Asian countries and from parts of Africa, often illegally. You have the Maoist era tradition of eating anything that can be eaten (because, like most communist countries, farmers were class enemies and the average man off the street could of course do a better job, which led to a famine that exceeded that of the brainbox Stalin). The wild animals themselves are often consumed by a minority of the population, these people are often very wealthy and very well connected within the CCP. The other major use, which we'll all know, and despair of, is in 'traditional Chinese medicine', which, exceeds even homeopathy in its kookiness, it's also largely responsible for depopulating large tracts of the fauna in Africa (which China exerts increasing, and inexorable influence over).

Ebola is somewhat similar, as the pattern usually follows the consumption of bushmeat, usually a primate of some sort, people get ill, but it fizzles out due to the high fatality rate. It's a lot more understandable in Africa, as the areas it breaks out tend to be remote villages, where people live in poverty and need to eat to survive. Plus in those remoter areas there's still a great deal of mysticism, which really doesn't help. There are also rather a lot of conspiracy theories concerning the origins of certain diseases, which the USSR put out to discredit the West during the Cold War - but is no longer around to revoke, so there's a general suspicion of western medicine.

There's a great deal about the CCP that's frankly farcical, I'd advise anyone wishing to know more to look up 'The Cultural Revolution' and the 'Great Leap Forward', then consider that we're dealing with that system, ran by a leader that's built their image around returning traditional cultural practices, and whose government is actively promoting traditonal Chinese medicine as a potential cure for this disease.

We've given the PRC the degree of power it has through greed and short-termism, but as liberal western democracies we can't afford to allow this system of government to continue to gain influence, this is something, that our national government's are beginning to treat more seriously, we can only hope that it's not too late.

Busy day of homeschooling, followed by a family game of life! I won but I had 5 kids 😂 3 is more than enough thankyou! 🤦‍♀️😂 I've just caught some of the news, Australia doesn't seem to be as badly affected, 18 deaths out of over 4000 cases according to someone I know living there... Is there any countries which dont have it?

I thought he had come out of isolation a bit quick too. I thought you could still be infectious until 14 days after the symptoms first started showing.
So did I! Madness... I'm really hoping we all stay healthy, I've felt completely exhausted and achy the past week, but no cough or temperature so I'm putting it down to having to juggle homeschooling, housework, 3 young children, 8 pets and everyone's sleep patterns been out (children are still awake 😳)

There are afaik countries without any confirmed cases, but that's largely down to lack of testing facilities - either that or they're North Korea. Australia is famous for their biosecurity, and their healthcare system is very good, the cities are densely populated, but the majority of the landmass is extremely rural.

I think I'd feel exhausted with your children and animals to look after, glad my 3 children are all grown up with homes of their own. There are the usual lot of bugs around at the moment as well as Corona, not to mention it's hay fever time as well. My hayfever has kicked in a bit this week. I hope the children go to sleep soon.

:) Speaking of bugs, I tried to have a shower this morning at 0700, was sharing with quite a large a spider, so opted out, I liberated it, but met it again nesting on the handle of my steam cleaner in the afternoon. I guess because the weather has been a bit random, it's came inside to weather out the colder nights.
