COVID-19 Coronavirus

As I usually make my own bread I was a bit miffed at the absence of bread flour recently but found a solitary bag in a local Sainsbury’s today.

Maybe everyone will discover the joys of home baked bread now.
I made a lemon & caraway loaf last week

Yes, bit miffed by that myself really, have enough left to make one loaf, but I'd really like to try a few new recipes, but alas, the shelves are bare. Given how involved the process is, how many people do you think will actually have the slightest idea how to use the stuff?

Wiebke's right … I'm afraid panic buying is one of the negative aspects of modern British Society

In Switzerland the shelves have been emptied in record time and Germany is closing its borders except for commuters (of which there are thousands working in Switzerland but living in Germany, France or Italy because it is a lot cheaper) and goods transports because (cheaper) German shops have been hit by panic buyers from across the border to the degree that they are struggling with supplies... :mal:
I am keeping an eye on the situation there because of my family.

It's certainly true that people seem a lot more self-centered than one would have expected, Dad commented today that it all started with Thatcher (he did vote for her three times, so it's a bit of a surprise). Ultimately we all live in a society, and although we generally get away with ignoring the uncomfortable issues that don't directly effect us, if people don't pull their heads out of their backsides* then we'll all suffer as a result.

*No offence meant to those that voluntarily choose to have heads up backsides as a recreational activity.

In German we have an expression for that kind of attitude: 'After me, the Great Flood'.
I.e. as long as I am safe and dry I don't care about what else happens to the rest of the world.

German has so many succint exppressions for very specific and complex issues :) Think the English idiom is "I'm alright Jack". There seems to be an awful lot of I'm alright Jack going on, the poor chap must be exhausted.

My hub is now worrying me saying me and my parents (who are in their early 70’s( should think about self isolating as he’s a teacher. My parents would move in with me for a bit and he would go and stay in their one bedroomed bungalow. I’m feeling so stressed and anxious :(

Found myself sharing safe formula feeding advice today as there are “recipes” going round fb to make baby milk with carnation! I know they did it in the 50s but honestly. And of course watering down too. All because of selfish idiots. You can manage without nappies or loo roll but emptying shelves of formula is just another level 😭

@Wiebke do you use the big tesco at Cannongate? I go there too occasionally, so if you are stuck for transport to get there, send me a PM and I could give you a lift 👍

We more usually go Sainsbury's in Canley but we use both. I go to Bannerbrook for my piggy supplies.

It's not the worst idea - and nothing to worry about, just thinking through practical logistics. Your parents do have underlying health issues, and so have you.

That’s his reasoning. They have a briefing at work tomorrow morning. I wish they would just shut the schools to be honest.

True. I’m just stressing out far to much I think :(

HUGS!

Try to take consolation that Chris loves you and your parents well enough to not want to put any of you at any risk. And he loves you enough to also make sure that you are not left on your own fretting yourself to death. ;)

Ah, it's been a long week. 45 rolls of toilet roll (and it's scented too. WHO EVEN WANTS SCENTED BOG ROLL?! nobody, that's who), practising my breaking and entering skills to get a friend back into his flat, my flat being an assault course with double the furniture in it that I'm supposed to have, Tesco apparently running out of tobacco, and pondering daily about ringing my parents and making sure none of the family are ill. My sister works in the NHS, although not frontline, but still. Since I haven't spoken to her in around a decade I'd have to go through my parents to find out.

Is it wrong to want to self isolate just to give myself some headspace? I'm not at any massive risk, of either catching it or suffering badly from it, but the world's gone buck daft.

I love Quincey! When I was at uni I found an address for him (obvs the actor not actual Quincey) and so I wrote to him with a printed photo and he signed it and sent it back! I still have it now, was so chuffed
Well Jel :))
