so I came downstairs this afternoon to see momo fagged out on her fave plushy having a bit of a grouchy inhalation episode. Yesterday, perfectly fine. I went to stroke her and the excitement made the loud breathing stop. I've brought her upstairs and as she's settled down the grouching came back. She's in normal spirits, making lots of purring if I stop stroking her :)

Everything else if fine, no weight loss, eating fine, lovely poop! no crusts or discharges. I've rung the vets and I have an appointment for tomorrow to discuss an asthma chamber. I'm also going to ask for an xray of her head and chest to rule out occlusions, polyps or heart defects.

Ive been thinking what we've changed as well - we've had new veg boxes straight from the farm and they had green beans and chard for the first time. I washed them but raw veg is always risky. Also I have a new incense. I burn them upstairs only and the pigs are kept in a different part of the house with plenty of fresh air, I'm very careful about that. but the perfume might carry on my hair etc. We also use 3 types of hay. She's had all three regularly over 3 months so its weird its only happening now!

Does anyone have any experience with asthmatic pigs? or do the symptoms sound like something else?

thanks guys,
Maya x

bump :(

We've been given 2 inhalers - a brown one for daily use and a blue one for emergencies. And 2 bottles of a liquid which acts like the 'blue one' but is for daily use. I'm to tell the vets if there has been improvement in a few weeks.

Our vet thinks Dusty suffers with asthma as he has no other symptoms other than the hooting. We used homeopet nose drops and put a few drops of olbas oil on a cloth by his cage. He doesn't really suffer too badly now but he was very stressed when we bought him home and hated the word rescue for some reason

I've noticed Momo started grouching again after her second dowse on day two. Appa even looked like he was breathing more quickly an hour after his treatment for the first few days. My vet has said to reduce all treatments to just one inhaler a day and see if that helps. I just think they'd be better without it.

What do you mean by grouchy exactly? A husky sort of breathing or more of a hoot type sound?

I had a few like that in the past , one in particular Would go into bouts of hooting !! after several months of vets visits Trying different things, It cost me a fortune, the only thing that made any difference was paediatric Sudafed 0.1ml My vet finally arrived at the Conclusion that it was an Allergic reaction

It turned out that it was simply an allergy to house dust, Since I installed a H.e.p.a Filter In my pig room, His hootings stopped completely, And fingers crossed Never returned

My Frankie hoots quite a lot, has heavy sounding breathing, and sneezes quite frequently. After several vet visits it was discovered that one of his internal nasal passages is misshapen and narrower than it should be. As a result, dust that usually wouldn't bother a piggy becomes trapped in his nose. It is only by sneezing that he can release it. This means he is more prone to URIs, and sometimes struggles to breathe if he gets too excited.

He is now bedded on vetbed and his hay gets a good shake before they're fed.
