Cystease for piggies

Hi there,

What's the maximum dose of Cystease per day for piggies please?
I've been giving my piggy half a capsule + 1ml water per day, but she's still passing blood and still squeaks a little now and then when passing urine.

She has been on multiple and extended courses of antibiotics over the past 5 months because in the beginning a blood test showed UTI. She's also had an x-ray (there are no visible stones or masses seen other than ovarian cysts). She has now also been spayed to remove the ovarian cysts and her ovaries. Our vet says he has now done everything he possibly can for her and that we should continue with the Cystease. Since it's not working at the current dose (she's still passing blood), I wondered if it's okay to give her more, and if so, how much more per day please?

What is your piggy's weight?

For an average 1000-1200g kg piggy you can give 1 capsule per day, either once daily or half of the mixture about every 12 hours.

Mix with at least 2 ml and syringe half of it at once. Keep the little mixing bottle in the fridge and shake before use. If needed a little more water to loosen up the mixture before the second use. You can in a pinch give 1 capsule twice daily for 2-3 in order to get a flare back under control in stronger cases and see whether that works.

If cystease alone doesn't work, your vet may consider cartrophen, which research has shown can also work for guinea pigs. In one case, the combination of cystease and cartrophen by a treating vet has helped one of the forum piggies with a stronger form of sterile cystitis.

How much metacam and in which concentration (0.5 mg/ml cat or 1.5 mg/ml dog) is your piggy on?

She weights just over 1200g and she's no longer on pain medication. In fact, she seems to start feeling unwell and get worse after a few days of metacam.
Thank you for the information, I'll keep the cartrophen in mind too. I'll try up the dose of cystease to 1 capsule daily and see if she improves.
