Dandruff

Oh have they been away boarding? In that case it is possible they have the start of mange mites :( Mine got these when boarding a couple of years ago, not down to cleanliness but they were triggered by stress & being away from home :( Look for some thinning fur in places such as the lower rump/back above the hip area, it usually presents with thinning fur & tiny little scabs on the base of the hair shaft, the mites are under the skin & invisible to the naked eye x
Oh dear. What do you think we should do then, go to a different vet, or just get some treatment?

I never treat on spec :) Personally I think it's a false economy, a vet is always the best person to diagnose :) My jabs cost £5 per pig at my vets, with one consult but I feel safe in the knowledge they have been treated properly :) x

Get someone to hold them still whilst you have a good search through their fur, mine was barely noticeable, but I always spot problems very early on ;) I would then book an appointment next week at Alfreton if that is a cavy savvy vets :)

Was your piggy ok after the jab @Poppy'sMum and did it clear quickly?
I fear if I leave it until next week something like stabbing will happen, but they're closed tomorrow and I don't think it'd be classed as an emergency.

Yes they are fine, in fact the mites lay dormant & will re-emerge at times of stress sadly :( I think one of them has them again as they were boarded in June but were scratching a bit before then, but I notice some broken hair on one of them, only the size of a 5 pence piece, but with little scabs at the root of the hair, I could feel them. All 3 have had a jab this week to be safe & my vet laughed when I said I was a neurotic owner but she said if only people brought them in this early she wouldn't see the bad cases with fitting etc :( x
What;s stabbling? Lol :D

Hmm stabbling :))Blame the autocorrect lol!
I'm glad to hear they are ok now, sounds like we will book them in for Monday probably, does it cause any harm to have a jab even if they don't have the mites ? x

Not at all, it won't get worse that quick, especially as they aren't showing signs of hair loss at the moment & as long as they aren't scratching constantly Monday will be fine :hug:x
That gives you time to have a good search lol :D

@Poppy'sMum we took the girls to alfreton this evening (we couldn't get them in before) and the vet was really good, we've not been there before see, and she did a tape test and announced they had lice, not mites, which was what I suspected from Monday as I saw yellow dandruff on the skin and also black things. Anyway, we have been prescribed ivermectin spot on, so I'm glad it's nothing serious! We also had a problem with Lola' s poop but I've been reassured about that now! :))

Awww well at least you know what it was, "Walking dandruff" is what they call lice, that's probably why you didn't see it later as they had probably walked off to a different area on your piggy lol :D They will feel much better now they've had their treatment ;) x
