This is Darcy. She was a breeding pig up until her recent last litter and the age of three. She was on an add site for only £5 :o

I decided i'd give her a lovely retirement home. x) The trio are not quite sure of her and vice versa. They had a nasty episode where Butler my boar bit her and since then they all just have supervised floor time where she will venture in to the group then run back to me when they get a bit lairy.

She's on her own for the moment and i'm hoping after a few months of floor time with the trio she can go in with them by spring when they go back outside.

I realised the other day the reason she reacts badly to my trio is that i'm almost certain she is blind. She doesn't follow food with he eyes when i'm feeding her she follows her nose. She doesnt react to hands in front of her face at all and I noticed she walks round her cage with one side of her body to the edge all the time for guidance. She also seems to struggle for the first few mins if the cage changes (I dont do this anymore)

She is a very sweet girl who loves hearing me talk to her and is very comfortable with being handled and stroked. She is currently spending her retirement demanding food, wheeking, popcorning and snuggling in for snoozes on my lap x)

Here she is (after my shamefully huge intro :x )

What a beautiful girl. She's lovely. I hope she has wonderful retirement with you all.

I love her to bits. I really couldn't be without her now x)

Oh my goodness she is stunning! Lots of wheeks from Casey, Valentino, Poppy and Phoebe

I am sorry for the poor, beautiful girl! At least now you know what lies at the bottom of her problems.

You are right to take it slowly. Make sure that you constantly talk to her as soon as you enter the room. Also train her and your group to react to catch phrases. I used to touch my blind piggy lightly on the back as well as telling her that I was going to pick her up, so she could brace herself. Mischief learned to follow my voice and orient herself by it to the degree that she would come to me across the lawn over a distance of several yards when I called her back to the run from a free roam in the garden.

Perhaps you can also try one-on-one run time sessions, starting with the least dominant girl? Just take it as it comes; Darcy may surprise you yet!

I have been letting her and Bella have a little extra time together. Bella is very interested in Darcy and is always trying to approach her (when she gets the chance) Bella is very calm with Darcy and walks slowly up to her to investigate. Darcy is ok with her to an extent but she can get a little scared and Bella backs off straight away. I think they could become very good friends.

What a lovely lady. i can't believe she is 3 - she looks so small.
We have similar problems with our arthur (see becklen marriage announcement thread) but now he has thelma with him he has blossomed and she acts as a guide pig for him. she will try and eat his food for him though (greedly gutsmallethead).
Darcy did so well to manage those litters whilst blind.
wishing you and her happiness
B

Please don't worry about her guys. She is very happy and lively. She does the hugest popcorns ever and gives me lots of piggy kisses. Being blind or even partially sighted does not hinder her in any way.

x) She is a beautiful piggie and oh so adorable x) hope she's settling in well :)

She's one of the loveliest pigs I've seen in a long time - she's stunning! I love her pink eyes. Give her a hug from me x)

OMG, Darcy is an absolute little sweetie. I love her. I hope she settles in and gets used to everyone with time. Aww. xx

Beth xx

Wow Darcy is beautiful. Such a shame she is blind, bless her. But good to know she is enjoying time with you etc.
