I'd stay away from Rottweilers if I were you, @exia

I once got inspected and 'herded' by a Rottweiler and German shepherd when out for an early morning cycle. The Rottweiler merely rubbed his tooth against my lower leg and that left a wopping dark bruise about the length of my thumb. I was on a rural road and man was I frightened. Just at that moment the farmer came round the corner of his building and called his dogs. I had not been on their property.
Anyway, rottweilers are not any smaller than labs. We had a lab when I was growing up and she wasn't a problem with the guinea pigs. We even had them in an open-topped cage in a room the dog was allowed in. Though from reading on here, that's maybe not the best plan, not 100% safe.

My neighbour has a lovely sweet little poodle. A bit hyper, very friendly, wants to greet everybody and be stroked. I don't know how poodles are temperament-wise with little herbivores. But obviously the breed has to appeal to you too. I think I wrote a bit about our lab and my guineas over on my thread called My guineas. If you're interested.

Since @Merab didn't get any specific breed in English, I checked German. No translation there either, it's just described as dogs bred and used for specific purposes, including as guard dogs and police dogs. German shepherds and Rottweilers are herd dogs, but they are used as police dogs too. There's an international list: German shepherd, Malinois, Rottweiler, Dobermann, Hovawart, Boxer, Riesenschnauzer, Airedale Terrier und Bouvier des Flandres. According to the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI). So no border collies, which are proper sheep dogs in Scotland. But not guard dogs, they usually slink away from humans. And no Bernese mountain dogs.

A rottweiler needs very much from the owner, and its sadly not an option for us now. My SO never had a dog and we have an 10 year old at home that has to be able to take friends home (and sometimes walk the dog a shorter distance by himself after school). Thats why I want a lab, but thats too big according to my SO 😅 I think its good we cant get a dog right now, so we can agree to disagree before we agree about something. Two stubborns!

I love labs, so I will definitely look!

Worked on a "dog kindergarten" in my teens and the only dog I didnt fall for was an Afghan because she was so boring and her humans never brushed her so she looked terrible. She was quite old too, and my feeling was that she did not enjoy being there very much and in combination with the very special Afghan-personality she was a b*tchlady.

I also really like brukshundar, a Beauceron is my dream 😍 (but they're very wild as puppies so probably smart to wait till there's some more space 🙈), sightdogs have such a unique personality that unless the owners really work with them they will not like anyone, they're too dignified for humans it seems 🤣 but almost all other dog breeds are amazing at immediately making you fall in love with them 🥰

I also recommend that you can do dog breed tests (hundrasquiz) to see what breeds they suggest to you, they aren't really that accurate but they are good at giving suggestions and telling you some of the pros and cons with different breeds!

I love those tests! A very few of the breeds we want in our imagination fits our life. We live to small, has to think about kid and friends, other potential pets, and so on. In the end its like babies; you want a nice and happy one but you never know. The important thing is its a healthy one.

Hi Ed & Lady Nutty! Long time no see. We missed you and hope you're all right.
It's still very strange without our Kongo. Both me and slave has been sad, but I'm starting to get back on my paws more and more. Its a bit gross slave dries her snot in my beautiful hair do, though... I say to slave everyday I want a girlfriend, she talks about plums and that she is quite sure I have them left. I dont even like plums? Told her many times. I like all kinds of kale, and tomatoes!

She's still amazed about how much hair such a little animal can have. Joe was a hairy ball but not like me she says. She's totally in love with peruvians now!
She dont know "typical personality traits" for a peruvian, but lord I'm charming and easy to handle. She realise the other ones has been a bunch of trouble makers! The worst one was the shortest haired one, mister Kahn. I love to hear slaves gossip about him. He sounds like a crazy freak show!

What we dont do for our pigs... If they only knew how much people can stare at the "crazy cat lady" on the subway. And when you explain its for your Guinea pig they give you that look that means "oh she's a psycho. She have rats. Should I call the psych wars for her?!"
