my guinea pig jimmy stopped eating last Saturday so he had dental done on Wednesday as this teeth were over growth. Wednesday evening he was not eating so he got painkiller and gut stimulant on Thursday and Friday. still with no eating. i brought him back to the vet Friday evening were she saw he had an infection in his mouth and she have him antibiotics, more painkiller, fluids and gut stimulant. again no eating , Saturday the same and today Sunday no eating and she repeated all the injectaions this morning and still no eating even tho the infection has cleared up. so she wants to give him another GA to take more x rays yo see if the molars are growing into his eye sockets as she can't understand why he won't eat if the infection is gone and if still won't eat even with the painkiler. any ideas? . . . . .

Are you syringing the food etc. ?/
Jimmy may have a very tender mouth atm (imagine how you'd feel after the trauma of an invasive procedure at the dentist :()
I would mash his pellets and syringe to keep his weight up and gut moving or buy the Critical Care from your vet. Is he drinking ?/

Weigh him and feed to the guidelines above.
Hope Jimmy is feeling better soon and gets his appetite back - keep us posted on the little fella x>>

That's a lot of Fibreplex - 1ml per kg twice a day is the stated dose.
Aw, poor little fella sounds interested in food, could you mash the veggies to a near pulp for him :)

She said six mls because he is eating nothin else......
I have tried everything your could think of for him to eat iv blended veg and grated veg hay grass nuggets musili everything even baby food. ?....

I would contact FurryFriends or Suzy on here.
Have you tried him with a bit of grass - anything to keep his gut moving is helpful. I have a boar who wouldn't eat a thing when he had a bladder stone and he was skin and bone 8...Kept him alive on grass, dandelion leaves, syringe feeds etc. until he was fit enough for surgery. Now a healthy bouncing boy xoxo
Is Jimmy on Metacam ? This can diminish an appetite too :(
Persevere with the syringe feeding, it's the only food intake he will manage, may hate it but will keep him going until he feels well enough to eat for himself - will keep checking your thread for updates and sending Jimmy lots of healing vibes from us all here x>>

Thanks for support and advice.....
He is on metacam yes for pain.....
He has lost a gram since friday.......:(:(

Only just seen this, but will do my very best to help you.

Is he eating anything for himself? If not he needs to be syringe fed, approx 120 mls of food per 24 hours. This can be something like Critical Care or mushed up nuggets. I find using a 1 ml syringe with the end cut off the best way to feed. You can syringe in 1 ml at a time. I aim to feed about 20 to 25 mls of syringe food her sitting, although if your piggie takes less then you need to feed little and often.

How much Metacam are you giving him? Which antibiotic has he been given?

he is on. 05 metacam and is on baytril antibiotic which i hear can be hard on the tummy...
He is finished the beytril now as the mouth infection has cleared up, but he is still not eating..?
Is it enough to be giving him six mls of fibreplex? Or sould i syringe feed to?
My vet wants to be a x ray tomoro to c if teeth aregrowing into eye sockets? With GA
I really dont want this to happen
When he smells the food he really wants it but then turns away
Ive mushed up food, ive tried everything x

You MUST syringe feed. He needs about 120 mls of syringe food a day.

Personally I don't think he should be having a GA when he hasn't been eating anything for days.

Piggies don't always eat immediately after having dental work and it can take days, weeks or even months before they begin to eat. In the meantime he is going to need regular dental work as his teeth will be overgrowing again as he isn't eating. Can your vet do dental work without GA?

I dont think my vet can do that....?
Is it common for teeth to grow into the eye socket?
I no i must syrine feed but i hate disstressing him, but it must be dont.
Thank you for all you advice. If you haveanymore send it my way :-)
Do * no why it takes so long for them to eat again x

You really need to find a vet who can file the teeth without GA. The teeth will very quickly overgrow again as he is not eating for himself.

Although he may resist syringe food you must get it into him. Most piggies get used to it, especially when they realise they are feeling much better once they have some food into their tummies.

I have a Sanctuary for piggies with extra needs (especially dental), and they are all different. If they have ulceration in their mouth it can prevent them from eating, or it may be that there is still a little spur rubbing the mouth. Sometimes they associate eating with pain, and even though that pain has now gone they are too scared to eat for themselves.

I care for a large number of dental piggies and I have never had one where the teeth have grown into the eye socket

Ok, i will tell my vet that i *** want to go through with the x rays.
I will find a vet, i live in ireland and can be very hard to fine guinea pigs vets.
I really value your advice :-) as i sometimes feel loney tryin to care for jimmy, as people think why would you bother to worrie over a guinea pig, i will do anything to make jimmy feel better and start eating again x

Have you got any syringe food into him today? You must start now and aim to get 20 mls in per sitting. See how many you can get in before you go to bed. If your piggie doesn't like Critical Care very much then try something else. Most of my dental piggies love the Burgess Blackcurrant and Oregano. It also mushes up easily as it is very tiny pieces.

I am syringe feeding him cumcumber, excel pellets and the firbreplex and vitc + water. .
Hard work :-)

I don't have much to add but my heart breaks for you and your piggy. I know how horrible it is to go thru this. The first time the Vet accidentally cut his gum and he couldn't eat properly for 3 weeks. I was so stressed out. I was syringe feeding him as you are.

I used critical care and baby food for the most part. Later I found out if I rolled up dandelion leave into cigar pieces he could eat those. His front teeth had been cut too short and he could'nt grasp or tear foods properly. Once I got the food into his mouth and back where his molars were he could eat it. But it was a struggle.

I'm so sorry you and your pig are going thru this. It's hard. I felt alone too because I don't really know anyone where I live that has guinea pigs or cares like I do. Ppl at work think it's funny but cute.

Let us know how you make out.

brought jimmy to the vet.. She repeat all meds, painkiller, antibiotic, fluids and gut stym.
I gave him. 05ml of appke juice and an hour later hes eating cucumber :-)
I am one happy piggie
