Hi guys, not sure how to connect this to my previous thread about Beanie. This time around, the vet saw a large upper teeth spur and his bottom teeth were a bit slanted. They filed down the spur and the bottom. He had to go under full anesthesia. Head and teeth xrays look good. He got an injectable pain med at the time and I am just giving him metacam now.

He is still quite lethargic post procedure which was late this morning. He is also making a hooting noise/weird noise when he is breathing.

Am I safe to keep syringe feeding as long as he swallows? He took a bit of syringe feed on his own but is still a bit loopy.

Any thoughts on the hooting? is this anesthesia? How long till the anesthesia wears off?

Any help/experiences would be helpful! @Wiebke @furryfriends (TEAS)

Please continue to feed. Breathing problems are not quite rare after a GA; hooting is usually a symptom of a mild blockage in the nose (i.e. some fluid may like have backed up). The breathing should have hopefully settled down again by tomorrow.

thanks @Wiebke , is it normal for them to be less active the day of the procedure?

yes, it’s the after effects of anaesthesia.

Thanks! I am so nervous. He is just sitting under his stool looking glazed. The hooting noise is odd. I'm scared to feed him :( The procedure was some time this morning, prb late this morning. He left the vet clinic at 3pm.

I don’t know what time It is in Canada. But I usually aim to feed little and often with syringe feeds every couple of hours after bringing home a post op piggy. So if he’s been home more than 3 hours I’d be offering a syringe feed.

How is he today?

Still not himself. Not very active. Took one of his overnight feeds all by himself in the cage but the others needed some encouragement. Took his softened vitamin c tab this morning(his fav) but not interested in his syringe feeds this morning. Was making odd hooting again this morning, it had stopped overnight. Really not sure what that is. Otherwise his breathing looks ok and he just seems tired. Maybe it is pain? He was due for his metacam this morning so we gave him that and are waiting to see. We divided the dose the vet gave us by two so it’s .225 every 12 hours (despite her still wanting .45 every 24 hours).

I am so very nervous :(

Can’t add to the great advice you’re getting but adding support.
Post op recovery and care can be stressful.
I added a small bit of mashed banana to Micah’s Recovery food when he was post op - he loved it.
Hope Beanie recovers quickly

Our boy is still not eating on his on. The procedure was Thursday. It’s Saturday morning. He is otherwise more himself now that the sedation was worn off more. He nibbled on some hay last night and we were so hopeful :(

Sometimes they manage hard foods better, such as a carrot or a broccoli stalk. Otherwise, cut leafy veg into thin strips x
Ok. Is it ok for him to have some veg if he isn’t eating much other than our feeds? His poops are quite hard and dark. Not sure if that’s normal given he is mostly only having the critical care
