hello, my guinea pig is 3 years old and recently went through surgery last week for his back teeth, he then started eating again and doing small poops, today we think he might have diarrhoea and he has stopped eating once again, anything we can do?

Try giving pro biotics. But you will need to start syringe feeding if he isnt eating atall , as his gut will shut down which is fatal.

Hi! Please step in with syringe feeding asap. Stay off any fresh veg until the poos have stabilised. The diarrhea is likely caused by a combination of antibiotics and not enough food. Keep in mind that 80% of a piggy's daily food intake is hay - so you are likely missing a lot more than you think. You need to weigh daily at the same time instead of once weekly in order to monitor the feed intake.

Please take the time to read these guides here. They are very practical and step-by-step and have been specifically written for owners with no previous experience. The syringe feeding and medicating guides contain pictures and videos, too.

I haven’t stopped syringe feeding, and hay is always in the cage but he refuses to eat it, taking him to the vets tomorrow and might have to be put down because diarrhoea is bad for a Guinea pig

Also he’s shaking

Don’t panic.

I know that is easier to say than to do but try to stay calm.
@Wiebke has given you great advice and useful links.
Having just nursed a piggy through surgery I know that healing takes longer than we want it to and can be a bit of a rocky road.

Keep syringe feeding and be guided by your vet.
Don’t forget to look after yourself as well

If you have major concerns, please contact the vet clinic promptly.

Post-op recovery can be quite a difficult time. Hang on in there! You may find the tips in the guides I have linked in helpful as they are based on our experiences with rocky recoveries.

I am so sorry to hear this.
You did everything possible for him.
You gave him love and care which are precious gifts.
Look after yourself and take time to grieve.

When you feel up to it feel free to post a tribute to him on the Rainbow Bridge thread
