Do Guinea Pigs Reabsorb Their Periods?

Hello I have heard on the Internet that rodents reabsorb their periods and when I found blood on my guinea pig's cage I was worried so I put some non-chemical kitchen roll in and then later it was covered in blood am I just being hysterical or do guinea pigs reabsorb their periods please help me xx

Have you checked your guinea pigs over? How many do you have?

Piggies don't bleed during their seasons, so it could be an injury or urine in the blood.

Could you take a photo for us? It could also be dried urine as their wee turns brown after a while.

Can't say for sure as I haven't checked your babies over or seen it. Hope they're okay!

Sows in season do not normally bleed and never heavily.

Please have your guinea pig vet checked for a urinary tract infection, which are pretty common and often start with bloody looking red urine. An antibiotic should hopefully do the trick.

Yes it does look like blood. Is it just the one pig you have?

Check her skin for any cuts etc and check her privates for blood too. As others have said it's likely to be a fairly bad urine infection or potentially stones too. Both of these will be at a painful stage so a vet visit will be inevitable I'm afraid!

I would be getting to a vets asap. I've paid piggies with blood in their urine but never as dark as that

That's good, hope she's on the mend soon! One of my girls had cystitis and it was very painful for her and I didn't pick up on it til the blood spots :(

If only they'd just tell us eh?

Hope the vets goes well today or tomorrow, have you got a cavy savvy vet? She may need X-rays or ultrasound if it's a stone, but hopefully it's just a urine infection and it's sorted soon

Cavy is another name for guinea pigs so a piggy experience vet :)

Generally they call themselves "exotic" vets too, I've personally found it difficult to find a good vet who is actually clued up on pigs. Finally found one and I'm more relaxed now!

Please have your piggy seen tomorrow. It can well be the beginnings of a urinary tract infection. A couple of my piggies have started like this.

It's good that you are taking her to the vet to be seen ASAP. It could be a urinary tract infection (sometimes the blood can look quite concentrated.) Guinea pigs do not bleed during their cycles so it's not a 'period' per se. Sometimes bleeding can occur from the uterus in cases of uterine infection, etc., which the vet should bear in mind. Best wishes and hope whatever it is gets cleared up quickly!
