dont have a problem with P@H but..

Just one point on this, I don't think it's fair to assume ALL P@H piggies are stock, mine has one in now who is and it states clearly he's there because he's 18 months and no one has bought him (white with red eyes who always seem to be unwanted), yet previously they've had animals in who've been surrendered from families for various reasons, I know my neighbours had two piggies who fell out at one time and said they put one of them in there (I don't know all the ins and outs but they brought the remaining piggie round after they had a house fire for me to look after and he was in a ferplast 80 so am not bloody surprised), as many people are unaware of rescues (until recently I don't think there was a piggie rescue in Coventry) they do at least have the option of handing in unwanted pets somewhere instead of dumping them on the roadside or setting them loose in a field.

If you change the word "surrendered" to P@H to "returned" to P@H then you'll get a clearer picture of why they take on "surrenders". Like Marks and Spencers they are simply letting people return "stock" that they don't deem suitable. Only the "stock" just happens to be alive.

In essence, they're actually making it easier for people to impulse buy the animals and then tell them it's OK to return them when they decide they don't suit or simply get bored.

But don't rescues always say you can take the animals back if you can no longer keep them too?

I think most rescues 'insist' on this, so their guinea pigs don't get passed from pillar to post, end up on preloved, or worse still as snake food. x

Rescues will vet the new owner and usually do home checks. They'll talk to them about long-terms costs and responsibilities. If it looks like the person is not committed to pet ownership or just getting a new 'toy' for a child, they won't rehome to them. Asking for guinea pigs to be returned if there is a change of circumstances is not seen as a way to get more guinea pigs homed in the short-term. It's looking after the long-term welfare of the animal.
I know there are a few exceptions, but essentially a pet store is just looking to take the money and hopefully sell a cage, food, toys, etc...
I don't believe that pet shops make much, if any, money out of selling the animals alone, they are looking to get people through the door and to sell the other merchandise, which is where they make most profit. Then once you've bought a pet there, they are hoping for repeat custom.

well that's not 100% accurate all of the time, as the piggy my neighbour took in wasn't bought from there originally, I'm not saying that isn't often the case, but my original point was people saying all the animals were unsold stock and I don't think this is always the case, similarly you saying all animals are "returns" isn't true either as my neighbour bought her piggies from an independent pet shop and then handed one into pets at home adoption when they fought. The only reason I know this is because I was telling her about the rescue after the remaining piggy died, and she was saying that she felt she had to go to P@H for new piggies because they'd taken her other in despite it not being from there.

BTW- I'm not saying I support the adoption centres, but you can't make sweeping statements that aren't always accurate by saying they're just a cover to sell old stock etc, even if some of the time this is the case.

Sorry- I'll leave this thread now as it's not relevant really, I just get annoyed by seeing things said as fact that aren't (too long working for a newspaper probably)

I will make sweeping statements when my local store have blatently lied about where the guinea pigs came from because they shift them quicker with a "sob story". Little thing called trust.

I've also never said that "all animals are returns" so please don't misquote me there.

Piggy Trains. Becklen have transported from Warrington to Norfolk, all over Scotland, Penrith to Hertfordshire, and well as locally all around Lancashire, Cumbria, Cheshire, Yorkshire. It may not happen overnight, but there is always a good chance people will help out with a piggy train. The guinea pigs are always well cared for during the journey, so no problems there. I think they even transported from Scotland to Ireland. xx

Thats true my girls came from England when I was living in Belfast, it was amazing everyone that could help did help. I've never seen team work like it! xx>>>

Some of mine came down from Gretna to Liverpool & Warrington before coming to me in Leeds. I am thankful to everyone involved. :)
