I woke up this morning to find dot hadnt really came out of her hidey house in the night, but as soon as i open the fridge shes all excited and active for veg. Shes started gobbling it all up in one sitting lol. Where as before she left red pepper and sometimes didnt even eat it.

Her nuggets were left untouched. And hay. Ive been stressed about it at work all day, but now I'm home again shes begged for veg ate it all and has been eating hay in the daytime because her pile of hay was flat and there are loads of poos all over the cage.

I dont know if when I'm getting her out for floor time (sometimes split by a fence with burnie and sometimes alternated) that shes getting depressed being apart or weva shes getting sick again. Shes teetering on the edge of being taken to the vets again i think. But i have already been told theres nothing more we can do for her other than a risky operation to find what her bladder wall growth actually is.

Sorry for the long post but its a tricky situation that i wanted to get out of my head

Hope she is ok, they are such a worry aren’t they. I weigh Bill and Ted every day because I’m so paranoid about dental problems now, although Ted has been fine. It’s a difficult decision with exploratory ops, fingers crossed she’ll be ok whichever decision you make.

It sounds like she's doing okay, but definitely worth keeping an eye on her weight. Weigh at the same time of day, as their weight fluctuates a lot.
Her weight still goes from about 980g to 1010g roughly. I honestly think il lose her early, hurts me to say but i dont want her operated on. At the moment though i really think she just wants a friend

If she is holding her weight, then she is doing OK on the illness side and is not in major pain.
The other side (Burnie) is unfortunately a waiting game...

Would it be possible to keep them side by side in a divided run with a plastic underlay under the bedding to protect the floor, so Dot has 24/7 company but Burnie can't get at her?

At the moment no i cant do it. But i can work on it. I'm going to see what i can come up with. Thanks for the idea

I can lend you some run panels of mine which work indoors as well as outdoors until you can sort yourself out provided you can come and collect.

A plastic sheet from a DIY store will protect the floor from any leaks and piggy messed. A couple of cheap acrylic or polyester bed spreads from Primark work perfectly fine; I use them for my 3 grid wide C&C pens. Some old or cheap cotton beach towels make a good temporary underlay.

I use that kind of set up in my kitchen for bonding (including overnight stays with a divider before or during bonding), as you can glimpse in the bonding guide.

Thanks so much for that offer. If I'm near by on a job in the van il ask you. Dot dropped a little bit of weight today. But i have noticed she went off her nuggets. Ive put some new type in mixed and nows shes scoffing them

I think aswell I'm comparing an adult guinea pig with a young junior pig. And expecting too much of dot maybe? Burnie is super energetic, dot used to be the same as a young girl.

Wiebke have you heard of little barnical its near coventry, i used to be up there alot

No, I haven't heard of that.

Start to offer Dot a mix of recovery feed and mushed up pellets in bowl if she continues to lose weight. Don't overlook that older sows can have a more fickle appetite, but that it also includes the crucial hay intake, which should make over 80%. It is the part of the diet that also easiest overlooked.

Yea she has 5 different types of hay or grass. I'm feeding timothy as the main. Then long strand clear bagged hay, then oat grass, sometimes readigrass, and meadow for bedding. And hay cookies lol. But they are not as good for her teeth

U
Porridge oats are great for helping to keep weight up! I feed them a lot to the piggies at TEAS.
i used to syringe pip porridge oats with ellas kitchen carrot flavour baby food ( no added sugar). He was a real fight when he had bladder stones. I was syringing for 2 months. We lost in the end. If dot has lost more weight by tomorrow evening i will start syringe feeding

Aw it does sound like Dot misses Bernie. Fresh corn on the cob or mini sweet corn coblets are great for weight gain and also good for the teeth
Did not know this. I have tried them on them before and they loved them. I noticed they kept choking on the husk part though. But il just take that off. Tesco it is tomorrow then. I'm lucky where i live. A stones.throw from a huge tesco and kennelgate

Does anyone know any safe home remedies for bladder issue pigs? I'm sorry to keep going on about dot when you all have your own pigs to look after, my head is in constant pig mode at the moment lol

I’m afraid I don’t. Be careful on the feeding of sweet corn though. It shouldn’t be fed on a daily basis. Have you tried Dot on cystease capsules for her bladder problems?

ok i will be careful thanks. No i havnt tried cystease. Is it specialised guinea pig stuff? Or human

It’s a urinary supplement for cats. When my late Emma and Ellen had IC, I gave them one capsule of cystease daily mixed with 1ml of water bit your vet should be able to tell you how much of a capsule would be best

What does it do?

Dots had an hour out on floor time with loads of stuff to do and shes seems great, grazing, zoominh, popcorning too. She stops to have a strained poop. I think what we have is a pig in pain then suddenly goes ok again maybe, shes on loxicom and i will.try that cystease hopefuly

Can i buy cystease from a petshop?
You're best speaking to a vet first. Cystease and Cystophan are medications that are for certain types of bladder issues so you need to get an accurate diagnosis first.

I have a guinea pig who has been diagnosed with Sterile Interstitial Cystitis and my vet has advised he is treated with a combination of Cystophan (1/2 capsule day) and Metacam.

I buy his Cystophan from Animed Direct....

I'm.sure looking back that she was treated for cystitis, she is on metacam and has been since june time. So can cystease hurt ? If she hasnt got cystitis? I know from the xray that she doesnt have a bladder stone or any sludge.and she was peeing blood before . Not alot but pink tint to the urine that dried darker round the edges

Cystease won't hurt... But I think it's best to make sure this isn't a urine infection.
