Dumped pregnant guinea pigs

And another thing that doesnt help is that pets@home is always located on a retail park right near shops like dfs, next, tapi carpets and so on. A nightmare for bored kids saying mum can we go to the pet shop after. And so it begins, impulse buy of a gpig or rabbit and so on
And instead of charging a little £35 a pair. It should be i think about £80. Rant over :hip:

I really do hope they are found and prosecuted! Those poor piggies who weren’t found 😢😢😢💔💔💔 Terribly sad 😔

Well done to the RSPCA for doing all they could xx

Looks like they have mites, it's more likely that person couldn't afford vet care and therefore realised they couldn't be sold so dumped them. Unfortunately Guinea pigs are seen as a quick money making opportunity, there are thousands of Ads online all selling pet shop bred guinea pigs. Sad reality of the pet industry.

Since they no longer exist in the wild, ALL gp are pet shop gp that have been bred anymore. Whether they end up in private hands for generations or not, doesn't matter. If all pet shops stopped selling them, and people stopped breeding them or allowing them to mate, they'd be extinct in 10-12 years assuming one lived abnormally long.

Here, they are $35 locally and for whatever reason, the hairless ones are double that. Unless you have a few hundred of them giving birth constantly, I don't see how anyone can make any money "breeding" them, especially considering food + hay + veggies can easily top $60 a month for 2 gp. Selective dog breeds however could bring in a ton of money as people pay outrageous sums for some dogs. But even with dogs, same applies. If they are no longer allowed to mate, all domestic breeds would be extinct in 20 years, save for the couple that live abnormally long.

Like it or not, people are now responsible for gp's survival and the people "selling" them are the reason they still exist. I personally have mixed feelings on that, more so for the fact they don't exist in the wild, but unless we can reintroduce them to a place they are not sitting ducks for feral house cats, it's just the way it is anymore.

P.S. not condoning or advocating anything here, especially anything that violates forum rules. Just saying it's the way it is.

I see your point on the extinct matter. But another thing is if they were sold more expensivly they might not get seen as disposable pets and then we might get more guinea pig vets, because people are actually taking them to get treatment when they are sick.

And another thing is the rodent mills that chern out badly bred animals to pet shops by the 1000's. It is a difficult one really. I want small animals to be kept around as pets. But i want them to stop being sold to crap homes.

I think the best way for small animals would be private breeders and not pet stores. But there should be tight rules on space, how many times a sow is bred and so on

I think the ultimate selfless reply is that if even 1 guinea pig has to suffer for everyone to have pets then it's not worth it.

One day hopefully it will all stop. Until then I'm taking in as many as i can afford and have time for. I love taking in unloved animals. They are jus different to "new" pets that i have had. I get more of a drive to give them the best life i can.

But i did treat my new ones the same lol
