Eddie Had A Dental Today

yes, that sounds good as Cooks improved she was dropping but eating what she had dropped. She slowly got quicker and we started to increased the size of the food but only once she could eat all the little bits without masticating. It is a slow process, Eddie sounds like he is heading in the right direction. x

this makes me feel alot better. did you notice any slight drop in weight as she adjusted to each thing - like reducing meds, coming off them etc? does it seem a bit up and down as you go along? x

you should have seen his little poop pile last night. it was by far the best so far. i actually may have shed a little tear :))

it looks like he was trying to tell us that he didn't need the syringe feeds, as he's stable again today (up 10g from yesterday with hardly any syringe feed) :)

think he's getting fed up of being picked up out the cage all the time. so we're weighing him once a day from now and he will only come out at meds times now.

i really think we're getting somewhere now, gradually. :)

thanks. i read through cookie's thread again and it sounds very similar in ups and downs as eddie is having. x

he's dropped to his lowest weight today so i don't think no syringe feed at all is an option just yet. so we're just giving him as much as he will take comfortably each time he has his meds. he really cannot afford to drop even more weight. he's so thin now.

i don't know if it's been too long and there is something else going on. in some ways he's better but it's very slow progress.

Yeah I think you are going to still have to supplement him, it is a long process :( I hope he turns that corner soon x

thankfully he is taking more syringe feed so maybe he knows he needs it. even if i could just get a small amount into him each time, at least it's a bit of a top up of something good. one mouthful for him is 0.3ml of feed. so he's calm and comfortable with that amount at a time. so it's slow going but just happy he wants some again.

poor eds. he's getting frustrated i think. but he really wants to do it by himself now. he keeps trying and trying so he has that fight at least.

i've just ordered him some fibafirst and some willow sticks. hoping he will gnaw at them and that will help his frustration aswell as make him use his jaw and teeth even more. when mollie arrived, her previous owner brought some willow sticks and eddie loved them so i've ordered those particular ones for him.

he's eating veg well still. he is nibbling hay quite regularly and attempting bits of softened pellets and normal pellets still. he isn't doing as many poops as i would like, but when he does, there is a little pile of them and they're not too bad.

thanks for the support x

The poo's will come its a case of less in less out I am afraid.... The Metachlopromide will keep it pushing through, as regards to Hay have you got any Oxbow Orchard grass? This is the only thing Cookie would touch at first.. PM me your address and I'll post you a sample bag to try him with save you buying it x

i haven't got any of that one no. if you wouldn't mind sending a sample, that would be brilliant. will pm you now. x

so we ended up back at the vets again as eddie started wheezing and snuffling when eating. he also dropped to his lowest weight. he must have aspirated some of the feed which is the reason he became upset with it. thankfully we caught it on the verge of becoming more, so he's now on an antibiotic aswell (doxycycline 0.1ml once a day)

the vet had another look in eddie's mouth and that's all still looking good. so he's eating enough by himself to stop his teeth over-growing again.

so basically we're continuing as we were for now, with the added antibiotic aswell. fingers crossed again. my nerves are shot! x

Oh poor Eddie :( And poor you! Have you thought about getting a fecal test done? He is insured isn't he? It is less invasive than other tests, I would get a sample sent off to Chester Zoo, they did the very comprehensive tests on my piggies xx

i hadn't but could mention it to the vet next time i speak to him. he doesn't think more tests are needed at this point as he is improving, it's just very slowly. but if he does end up having more tests then i'll certainly mention it.

eddie is insured (learnt my lesson with no insurance!), so if he does need anything then we're covered. well, upto 50% anyway, as it all started with a dental related issue. xx

If it's any help at all, before Petal had her hysterectomy she was a whooping 1450 g :) She is now 1150 g which feels so slight, she doesn't seem to be able to put the weight back on :( However as long as her weight stabilises then I will have to accept that's how she is going to be, t's a miracle she's still here anyway so I am grateful :) xx

aw bless her :luv: i'm glad she's stable. even getting there is sometimes a struggle with them isn't it. :( i hope she continues to keep stable and maybe even increase gradually over time.

eddie's weight is a worry to me, as he's lost about the same as petal, around 300g overall now. he's had a real struggle bouncing back from this really. although he is such a determined little boy. he really wants to try and do it all for himself. he actually managed the most pellets he has so far last night. :)

yay, my vet uk order has arrived so he now has some fibafirst and willow sticks to nibble on aswell. :) to add to his collection of things to keep tempting him! :))

lee's (sport_billy) idea of a sample of orchard grass turned out to be a whole bag! how lovely is that :luv: makes me so emotional when people do something so kind. thank you lee and co. :luv::luv::luv: x

no worries x

Sorry to hear Eddie is going through it again, you are doing fantastic, love to him and hugs to you x

Has he tried the Orchard grass yet?

yes, he's had little nibbles :) he seems very interested in the smell aswell. although we've unleashed a monster where mollie is concerned! she LOVES it! :)) but it's encouraging him to nibble alongside her so that's good. he never did like missing out on food :))

It is like a drug to piggies, I must admit it smells nice.

it's horrible seeing him fed up and quiet :( i think the antibiotic is making him feel even more off as he's not really nibbling anything now, and he left some of his tea. this just makes things even harder because we have to go extra slowly and carefully with syringe feeds, and he already isn't having enough, so if he slows down his eating even more, i don't know how we will get enough in. he also did a horrible mucus poop string again. :(

we also figured out that it was probably the water that went down the wrong way as when i try to syringe him bits of water, he starts backing off.

felt like he was getting somewhere with his eating and pooping. now the stress of having to go back to the vets, and being on an antibiotic aswell, has just set him back a little and he seems tired from it all.

he's the same weight today as yesterday so that's something. although after today, i don't think he will be tomorrow. just got to take it slowly with regular feeds and try our best. this latest feed he didn't want. i think because he had meds before it. the one before which was just the feed, he took the most for a while. so in a way, i think separate meds and feed times would be better, but then that's bringing him out the cage more. although today he has been getting straight in the carrier or little bed to be picked up so maybe he knows he needs it. just hate when he starts backing off and his breathing must increase slightly as he starts 'coo-ing'.

i just want my chunky happy little eddie back. earlier he said 'pop pop' as he got back in the carrier to go back to the cage so that's a little positive as he's been so quiet. he's usually always going round saying 'what what what' :luv:

he seems brighter this morning thankfully. his night feed went well. i think he prefers the critical care without the avipro plus added. he wheeked for breakfast this morning, came out into the run part, stood up at the bars (he hasn't had the energy for this lately), and he ate all his share. he's since had his meds (he hates the doxycycline!) and another little feed. i think he's getting more confident with it again now but we're still going extra slowly. he's still got a slight wheeze on the end of his purrs but overall he's doing well. when he went back to the cage, he was muttering a little bit to himself. still not seen him eat any hay but he's had a couple of pellets this morning.

o/h said he would probably seem a bit worse after yet another vet trip so hopefully he's right and that's what was wrong. it was a bad one for dogs in the waiting room (even mollie was scared and quiet after) and obviously he's having to adjust to the antibiotic aswell. i do think it's slowed his tummy down a bit more though so hoping once the poops start coming through better again, he will start to pick up again. he seems better after getting that horrible mucus one out.

will keep a close eye today and maybe speak to the vet tomorrow if things don't pick up with his tummy. x

just wanted to double check something - it is ok for eddie to have the extra vitamin c with the critical care isn't it? i know you need extra with recovery food, but not sure now about the critical care. and if he's eating veg, should he be having the extra? noticed him bunny hopping a little bit at times.

eta: can i add the vit c to his feed instead of mixing with water and syringing?

@helen105281

@Wiebke @sport_billy @ anyone else who knows! lol.

eddie now sounds gassy aswell. been giving tummy massages with my hand and an electric toothbrush which produced lots of loud gurgling.

does anyone know if i can give something for the gas alongside all the other meds he's on? (metacam, metoclopramide, cisapride, doxycycline) - i have woodwards gripe water in if that's ok to give alongside the other things? he's also on avipro plus and critical care aswell.

got to be the doxycycline antibiotic slowing things down even more hasn't it? :(

I know Doxy can affect them.

I personally would give the Gripe water as it is just a supplement really but check with your vet if you are concerned. I have given it alongside Metaclopramide before but have never had a pig on Cisapride. Don't give Infacol though as it makes the gas form one huge bubble which can lead to a torsion.

Sorry missed the tag last night, yes that is ok to add the vitamin c to his food as long as he is eating it and it is ok to have alongside the critical care.
