hi so last night I went to check on my pigs when I seen fairy just sitting staring at nothing and acting non responsive. I didn’t worry too much about it as it was around two in the morning and I never usually check on them at this time so I just assumed she was tired.
However, when I went in this morning she was sitting just staring at the back of the hutch and didn’t even come over for food what isn’t like her at all. She just sat their completely not responding or indicating that she had heard me. Her sister went over and nudged her a little bit still nothing.
I took her out and syringed fed her water to make sure she is hydrated and tried hand feeding her some kale but she acts as if she is going to eat it then stops. I have also noticed her breathing is funny, it’s like she is breathing hard and then making a little popping sound. Please help me I don’t know what to do my mum is at a funeral so can’t take me to the vet for at least another hour or so

It really sounds as if she needs to be seen by a Vet as she is breathing funny. Is there no one else near at hand th at you could ask to take you? If not, just keep her warm and quiet until your Mum gets back . If you have the Vets phone number you could phone them for more advice too. Hope your Mums back soon. Even leave her a text message so that she knows you are needing help, she’ll probably check her phone after the funeral is over. Xx

You know she needs to see a vet. It sounds like she could have a URI. She needs to be seen today, as soon as someone can get you there. Can you call the vets while you wait for your mum and tell them what is going on? Has she pooped at all? Apart from her breathing sounds/non responsive behaviour, are there any other symptoms?

Get on hand feeding now. If she will not take veg fromy our fingers, you need to start syringing her food. See this link:

Complete Syringe Feeding Guide

Anything you can get into her is vital. When was the last time you saw her eat?

yes I’ve left a message for my mum and we will be going ASAP. I’ve got her on my bed and cuddled up in a blanket she seems okay apart from the breathing still hasn’t eaten anything yet but she has had an eye infection in both eyes for a couple of days now which we are still treating I’m not sure if all of this could be because of that but I personally don’t think so. We had a similar problem with her a month ago where we had to take her to the vets because she had lost a lot of weight and wasn’t eating and we were told she had lost her sight. I totally agree we should take her back and we will really soon x

Please keep us updated. Do you have clean, fresh grass in your back garden? Could you try and tempt her with a little of that?

Ahhh I hope you can get her to the vets as soon as is possible for you, your mum and your piggie. I'm not experienced I'm afraid with this poorly piggie problem but I'll send healing vibes your way. Good luck and let us know how you get on x

She just seems to be constantly getting ill. My other piggies are rarely I’ll but with Fairy it’s every other week. Will keep you all posted on what the vet says and how she is x

Eye problems and URIs are often connected, so poorly eyes was probably a symptom of a URI that your vet missed. Do they have a lot of experience with piggies? It sounds like they haven't got on top of her problems, you could always see a more specialist vet for a second opinion.

Let us know how it goes at the vets, fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!

Hi everyone. A couple of hours or so ago we went to put her in her carrier to take her to the vets, I let her in with the others whilst I sorted her carrier and when she walked out of the hutch she was extremely wobbly on her feet and occasionally stopping to lie down. I tried to lift her to her carrier and sat her down outside it and her back legs completely gave out and she fell on her stomach then rolled over on to her side and back. I rushed her out to the car but it was already too late and she passed away. I think she had some kind of fit or seizure. I am so devastated and heartbroken she was my entire world and I so wish she was still here

Oh sweetheart... I am so sorry...

I know. I do. This happened with one of my little girls a couple of months back. We think it was a heart attack, she displayed the same behaviour as Fairy. I know that it will be little comfort right now, but try to find some in the fact that you were helping her, it was quick and she knew she was loved.

I think it’s better that it happened quick instead of her suffering for a long time. Thanks for the support it means a lot

Darling I’m so sorry! What a miserable time you are having. As @Mishka said it’s happened to us all at some point. I know that does nothing to alleviate your pain but you know we all can feel your hurt and sympathise with you. Remember, when you are feeling a little better that you can post on our Rainbow Bridge where we’ve all written and put photos of our pets.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Fairy sounded like such a sweet piggie. Popcorn free over the rainbow bridge fairy & you'll meet lots of other piggies there. Hugs xx

I am so sorry for your loss, you did everything you could, it's not your fault.
Sleep tight Fairy.
Run to the rainbow bridge & meet new friends. xx

I'm so sorry for your loss. Respiratory problems can progress really fast sometimes (I've lost pigs similarly in the past.) ((HUGS)) to you and so sorry you lost little Fairy.

Hello. I saw your Rainbow post and decided to read any other information about Fairy. Well what I've read and know about piggies what has happened is very sad and shocking. I don't know your age but I'll guess early teens. When something happens unexpected and it's new and we don't know what to do. It's hard lass very. depending on a lift to vets is out of your control etc. In my option I think you did great and well done. you did your best and she died with you around. your voice. your smell. You young lady did good in the circumstances. Big Hugs. :hug:Fairy now can see all the food in the world at Rainbow World. Xx
